If one completely considers (the effect) to be permanent, then it necessarily becomes unceasing and unborn, which is undesirable. The effect is considered to have the nature of arising and ceasing. How can emptiness arise? How can emptiness cease? That emptiness is also unceasing and unborn. Before the arising of the effect, emptiness in its own nature as the effect does not arise or cease. Why? Because its own nature does not necessarily abide. Therefore, if one completely considers emptiness in its own nature as the effect before the arising of the effect, because it does not exist, then it necessarily becomes unceasing and unborn, which is also undesirable. The effect is considered to have the nature of arising and ceasing. Furthermore, if one considers cause and effect to be neither the same nor different, one can analyze it in other ways: Cause and effect becoming one, is never reasonable. Cause and effect becoming different, is never reasonable. What fault would there be? If cause and effect are one, then arising and the producer become one. If cause and effect are different, then cause and non-cause become the same. Therefore, cause and effect being neither the same nor different is unreasonable. Furthermore, if one considers the effect from the perspective of its own essence existing or not existing, one can analyze it in other ways: If the effect's own essence exists, then what would the cause produce? The effect's own essence existing and arising is difficult to explain even in conventional terms. If the effect's own essence does not exist, then what would the cause produce? The effect's own essence not existing and arising is difficult to explain even in conventional terms. Therefore, whether the effect's own essence exists or does not exist, the cause cannot produce it. If arising does not exist, then the cause itself is not reasonable. Thus, because no cause can produce the effect, the cause itself is not reasonable. Here it is said: The cause is what produces the effect, because it is said, "This is the effect of this cause." Here it is said: If the cause itself is not reasonable, then whose will the effect be? The cause that produces the effect
