By showing how to practice, they generate joy. Those beings who, although having merit, are born in the realm of hungry ghosts etc. due to some karmic obscurations, if the Blessed One touches them with his nectar-filled fingernails, it will transform into the most excellent divine taste, and it will be inexhaustible. When taken and eaten by powerful yakshas etc., those beings will be satisfied with supreme bliss, and they will also attain excellent samadhi. Therefore, the Blessed One's act of eating is inconceivable. In what way does he perform the act of eating? Therefore, at the end, he said "afterwards" etc. After taking everything, the food that is eaten afterwards is the alms food that is eaten afterwards. This is because it is to include the hearers in the merit of practice, so it is taken first. "Eating" means having finished eating. Or "afterwards" refers to the food taken for the second time, that food is the later food, the later food is also the end of the food, and it is also alms food, the sentence should be combined in this way. Or the afternoon food, that is, the alms food that is eaten, is called "afterwards". Therefore, in order to show that he is one who possesses the merit of practice, and has abandoned untimely food, the word "eating" means that he is separated from these two. "Placing" means placing. Even though Indra etc., who are diligent in listening to orders in the presence of the Blessed One, are always present, in order to show that renunciation is done by oneself, the Blessed One himself placed the bowl and Dharma robes. This is also to eliminate the unhappiness in the hearts of those who have little merit and are unable to serve. He always stays far away from what appears to be impure, although he puts them on the lotus feet, but in order to comply with the thoughts of beings who like action tantra etc., or to show respect for the teachings of not allowing those with rotting feet to soil the bedding and cushions, so one should look at washing the feet. Laying out the seat means laying it out by the gods etc. Sitting upright means not being too bent, nor too inclined. The deportment that the Blessed One abandoned when teaching the Dharma.

Why does he reside? Because only renunciates can teach this Dharma, and are able to understand and hear it, others cannot. This is to instill diligence in renunciates towards the world. The phrase 'keeping mindfulness in mind' means that when one previously became a Bodhisattva, after attaining the supreme state, one made the aspiration, 'How shall I ensure that the lineage of the Buddha is not interrupted? I shall do that.' To remember that aspiration is synonymous with 'keeping mindfulness in mind.' The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are always in a state of Samadhi, and therefore always abide in mindfulness. However, mindfulness at the wrong time will not change anything, but remembering the aspiration at the right time will bear fruit. Remembering at the right time also shows that the Bhagavat is always in a state of Samadhi, so there is no contradiction. Then, why is it said 'many monks'? Because when the Bhagavat was in Shravasti, not all the monks of the Sangha who were residing there gathered at the time of teaching the Dharma, but it was shown that at least three or more monks gathered there. This was also said to gather them accurately, so that others would develop faith. 'Gathered' means only being near. 'Residing' means residing on a seat. The world, for the most part, first establishes the general, and then establishes the specific, so in order to conform to the world's reputation, both are mentioned. Otherwise, just saying 'residing' would include both. The meaning of the introductory words, etc., has been explained. Now, the initiation of the topic and the non-interruption of the Buddha's lineage will be discussed. It is mentioned twice to show that it is very wonderful. 'Sugata' means to lead. He has gone correctly from the path of the two selflessnesses. Because he has gone well, he is the Sugata, just like 'well praised.' Or, having completely abandoned the defilement obscurations and the obscurations of knowledge, along with their predispositions, and having gone, he is the Sugata, just like a completely full vase. Or, having gone without turning back, he is the Sugata, just like a plague that has been completely cured. 'How many' refers to the difference in benefits, the benefits of
