One should clearly understand all the terms such as the author and the action. The so-called "dharmas" refer to the dharma-sphere. This includes the unconditioned, because the dharma-sphere has the nature of seven entities. The remaining forms, etc., and one aspect of the dharma-sphere indicate the conditioned. This is a symbol, therefore the eye, etc., should also be grasped. Because this does not involve anything ultimately, and he does not think, "I have attained," therefore, abiding in the correct path, he is called a stream-enterer. If he were to cling to the notion that "I have attained," then why would he not be called a stream-enterer? The Blessed One replied, "If..." etc. If someone clings to the notion of "I," then they have not abandoned the view of self. One who has not abandoned the view of self has not generated the noble path. One who has not generated the noble path is an ordinary person, so how could he become a stream-enterer? He thought in this way. Thus, whoever clings to the notion that "I have attained" will universally generate the view of self. This indicates that the mind should be firmly grasped. All of this speaks to the profundity of this place. In order to illustrate and reveal this meaning through metaphors, he declared "Once-returner," etc. Here, too, all the meanings and connections of the words, etc., should be applied as before. Having abandoned the six types of afflictions to be abandoned through cultivation in the desire realm, that noble one is a once-returner, because he will return once to the desire realm. Having abandoned all the afflictions to be abandoned through cultivation in the desire realm, that noble one is called a non-returner, because he will not return to the desire realm again. When he has abandoned all the stains of afflictions associated with the three realms, at that time he is an Arhat, worthy of being offered to by the entire world. The so-called "there is no Dharma of an Arhat" refers to the wisdom that has abandoned such obscurations of afflictions.

Because it is established on the continuum of the earth, and also because the continuum exists as established, but in the ultimate sense, it has nothing, because that is a fabrication, so thinking. Now, the noble Subhuti, because he himself is independent, in order to make his words worthy of being heard, with the special qualities of having no afflictions and abiding, and the common qualities, describing himself in the manner of an Arhat, and in order to show that the mind is completely subdued, therefore he prays by saying "I" and so on. The so-called without afflictions is a distinction of Samadhi. Moreover, the Arhat who is liberated from the two grasps, solely with me as the object, thinking that others should not generate afflictions, enters into Yoga, and those who arise from that, with them as the object, others will not generate afflictions, therefore, what is the state of abiding without afflictions, those are called that. This distinction is joy. The so-called "I have not been prophesied" is because at that time the view of self has not been abandoned, so even if I find it difficult to attain the fruit of stream-enterer, then what need is there to mention the abiding without afflictions to be attained by the Arhat who is liberated from the two grasps, so thinking. To the thought of "how can one abide without afflictions," the answer is "not abiding in anything." Because I have obtained a conditioned or unconditioned result, clinging in this way, therefore whoever does not abide in this, it is said that whoever is the one who abides without afflictions, this is said in various aspects, this is a synonym for "not other." Now, I am the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, prophesied as the foremost of those who abide without afflictions. Bhagavan, even though I am a desireless Arhat, it is not because of clinging to self, then how is it? It is only clinging to mere terms, I have already said this. If in the ultimate sense there is nothing to be obtained and no obtainer, then Bhagavan, how did he, having become a Bodhisattva, receive the Dharma from the Tathagata Dipamkara? Or if he did not receive it, then at that time we who want to receive the Dharma,

Why is it that those who understand in this way, thinking that one should rejoice at the appearance of the Tathagata, are free from the fault of little learning, and thus attain the mastery of the sixth abode? The Tathagata said, 'Did the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, take any Dharma from Dipankara Buddha?' Subhuti also held to the previous thought and replied, 'No, Bhagavan.' As previously stated, in ultimate truth, there is no Dharma to be taken or a taker. Moreover, all Dharmas are inherently peaceful. Although this is so, due to the power of the Tathagata, it is only the arising of consciousness in which various collections of words and so forth appear that is nominally designated as 'taking.' Therefore, seeking extensive learning is fruitful. This shows that, in essence, a Bodhisattva should first please the Buddhas when seeking extensive learning, and then take the Buddhadharma. Such manifest clinging is an opposing factor. It also shows that to abandon these, one should abide in aspiration and vows. By merely saying 'Did you take any Dharma from Dipankara Buddha?' all characteristics of taking Dharma are refuted. By saying that there is no Dharma that was taken, the ultimate truth of all Dharmas is truly established, and it also shows abiding in yoga and cutting off distractions. It also speaks of the depth of this abode. If actions and agents, etc., are inherently empty in ultimate truth, then how should Bodhisattvas make aspirations in order to accomplish the purification of Buddha-fields? Those who think in this way are free from the fault of meditating on small objects, and thus attain the mastery of the seventh abode. The Tathagata then said, 'Whatever Bodhisattvas...' 'Untrue' means false. If so, why did the Bhagavan proclaim the pure and perfect Buddha-fields of the Bodhisattvas? Thinking in this way, they asked the reason. The answer is: 'The Buddha-fields of the...
