Or what fault is there if one says something like "O," or what cause is it if it is said to be nonexistent? If it is said to be the self-nature of the cause, then the cause and effect would necessarily be simultaneous. However, if it is said that the cause is something nonexistent, then it would not be simultaneous with the effect, because the nonexistence of self-nature is not reasonable. If it is indeterminate, then it would necessarily be an entity, like consciousness. Therefore, no matter how one analyzes the entities of arising, it is not tolerable. Even if it does not contradict valid cognition, there is no way to ascertain it with certainty. Thus, the entities of cause and effect are mostly proven by direct perception and non-apprehension. Both direct perception and non-apprehension, whether without an image or with an image, are not reasonable for apprehending it. Because there is no appearance produced by the object and no reason for proximity of meaning, it is not reasonable to posit that "this is experienced by it." The entity of the image is also meaningless, because the images of consciousness such as in dreams are not pervaded by entities. It is not reasonable to consider the various images that arise dependent on one consciousness to be true. Therefore, since arising cannot be proven by direct perception and non-apprehension to establish cause and effect, one must consider other methods. Therefore, even the omniscient one does not clearly know or use the characteristic of cause and effect as being dependent on others, because arising contradicts valid cognition. Those who follow reason should contemplate the state of non-arising, which is the nature of wisdom free from all faults, as the Sugata said: "The Dharma of constant non-arising, thus the Tathagata speaks. All Dharmas are also, similar to the Tathagata. Those of childish minds, grasping at characteristics. In all the worlds, practice the nonexistent Dharma." To analyze this extensively is to analyze dependent origination, so it will be set aside for now. If the protector is free from all elaboration and sees the aspect of Suchness, then because it is its nature, it is the Bodhicitta that accumulates the collection of wisdom.

Having become how will the Bhagavan Tathagata appear later? Even after becoming a Buddha, one completely passes into nirvana like a fire consuming wood, and even in the state of not completely passing into nirvana, one should establish the Sugatas who dwell in such and such places, and how they have passed away, the future, and how they have appeared in this way. Why does the establishment of the wisdom of omniscience establish the two characteristics of knowable objects? Furthermore, since the self-nature of mind-only is seen, and since it is separated from the nature of the two, the apprehended and the apprehender, it is established as non-dual. In the two states of Sugata and non-Sugata, by what is the defilement and purification established? These are some of the doubts that arose from within that mandala of attendants. In order to completely abandon the net of doubt. From such as, "There is no arising from another in suchness," up to, "Suchness is unborn and unceasing," is the answer. The intention here is that if suchness arises from what was previously unborn, and even after arising, it does not arise again, then in that case, since it is not equal in the sense of being without change, it would be logically fallacious to be impermanent. This is how it is intended: As it is said, whether the Tathagata is born or not, the Dharma-nature, the ultimate limit of reality, the inconceivable realm, and so forth, are only abiding. If this is the nature of wisdom, then like wisdom, it is without a body, so it will not abide in an object. How can that which is without birth and destruction be established as the Victorious One of the past and so forth? If the Teacher, the Omniscient One, is its nature, then even if it becomes two, how can it not contradict emptiness? Even if it is the nature of non-dual wisdom, how can it not become two when those who are fortunate realize it? If it was previously defiled and later purified, then it will be endowed with purification. Even if this is so, if at the time of defilement, it is the nature of two, then in this way, that which was previously non-existent at a later time

If it is completely purified because of being non-dual, then would it become unconditioned? To answer this, the Tathāgatagarbha does not completely arise from the aggregation of causes, nor does the Tathāgatagarbha arise as a nature that did not exist before. Nor does the destruction of dissimilar appearances occur. Place is location. Direction is towns and so on. Past and so on are time. Two and so on are states. Birth is continuous. Without it, there is no birth. Cessation is the cessation of continuity. Without it, there is no cessation, because the Bhagavan is in non-abiding nirvana. The meaning summarized here is: the Tathāgatagarbha is not what causes the Tathāgata to produce a nature that did not exist before, but rather, by purifying all the faults of unreal attachment, one obtains the stainless, because before the wisdom of selflessness of phenomena, the thick fog of attachment to grasping and holding obscures it. Not realizing it is also because unreal conceptualization existed before. Later, many times, with many methods, for a long time, one becomes accustomed to the wisdom of selflessness of phenomena, and the meditation becomes extraordinary, and all conceptualizations are cut off, and the wisdom of suchness arises, and the place of all propensities of superimposition also does not exist. The Tathāgata, who has such a nature, is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, fulfilling the wishes of all beings. This Tathāgatagarbha is thus completely defiled, that is, it is in accordance with the two attachments of existence and non-existence. This itself is also thus completely pure, that is, the mind that has the nature of seeing suchness, is free from all attachments. That complete purification also gradually changes. Establishing in the past and so on, is the nature of the Tathāgatagarbha's complete purification, the Tathāgata's dwelling and going and so on are also only unreal. However, worldly people, by its power, on the face of the arising of such an appearance, speak in that way.
