Therefore, mainly focusing on the self-knowing awareness that is free from duality and untainted by impurities, it is designated as Bodhi. This is abandoning the extreme of superimposition. If there is nothing for Bodhi to manifestly accomplish Buddhahood, then how does the Bodhi-nature, the Bhagavan, manifestly awaken to the Dharmadhatu? Therefore, Manjushri subtly asked, "Has the Bhagavan manifestly awakened to the Dharmadhatu?" meaning, "Is it not so?" The answer is, "The son of Sharadvati, the venerable one, has not." Why is that? It means, if the realization of the teacher, who thoroughly distinguishes through the realization of Suchness, is eliminated, how can it not contradict the tenets of the school? To show that the meaning of the subsequent statement is not being denied, it is said, "Thus, the Dharmadhatu itself is the Bhagavan." The intention is this: the essence of the wisdom of the stainless nature is Bodhi. The Bhagavan is also of that nature. The Dharmadhatu is also solely of that nature, because there is no difference between emptiness and emptiness. Thus, it is always taught. In this nature that is not separate, how can there be something to be awakened to Bodhi, or a Bodhi-being, or the nature of Bodhi? If there were, there would be an object and a subject. The characteristic of separateness is emptiness, and thinking that if there were no emptiness, it would not be so. The son of Sharadvati, the venerable one, said, "If the Bhagavan were to manifestly awaken to the Dharmadhatu," and so on. If the Dharmadhatu were to manifestly awaken to Buddhahood, then it would contradict and be inconsistent with what was previously established in various ways, that whatever is the nature of non-dual wisdom is the realm of non-origination, because in reality there is an object of knowledge and a knower. To show its nature, it is shown that it manifestly awakens to Buddhahood. Is not the nature of Bodhi the Bhagavan? Thus, not knowing what is meant by the nature of the Dharmadhatu, he asked, and that

Therefore, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said that the very essence of Dharma is enlightenment. Why is that? The intention of asking "Why is that?" is this: What is enlightenment? Because it is the nature of being free from all obscurations, it is the nature of reality. Since the essence of Dharma is the characteristic of non-duality, if all dharmas are of the nature of non-reality, then why is it asserted to be the very nature of enlightenment? Because it is impossible for reality and non-reality to exist as one. To that, here the answer is that the essence of Dharma is without sentient beings. Thus, the essence of Dharma, which is said to be without sentient beings, is a word for enlightenment. Similarly, that all dharmas are without inherent existence is a supreme word for enlightenment. Why is that a word for enlightenment? Should it be examined? Since the essence of Dharma is by its very nature without reality, it is reasonable to say that the essence of Dharma is without sentient beings. However, if no answer refuting the enlightenment of the nature of stainless wisdom has been given, then, for that reason, the nature of enlightenment, the Blessed One, which has just been taught, goes as a synonym for the essence of Dharma. That nature of it is a supreme word for that enlightenment, but it is not an examination, that is the final word. This also clarifies that the essence of Dharma itself is the Blessed One. Therefore, the meaning is this: the characteristic of being without what is to be known and the knower is what is the essence of Dharma. That itself is called enlightenment, because it shows that emptiness and what possesses emptiness are without difference. The essence of Dharma is neither without essence nor is it the essence of utter non-existence. However, it is only the self-nature of reality, the self-nature that is separate from all aspects of examination is called the essence of Dharma and enlightenment. Everything also does not transcend this Dharma-nature, therefore, contemplate from equality. Thus it is said, "All dharmas are without reality, that is a word for enlightenment." Why is that? That is, how the essence of Dharma is without sentient beings, and how all
