Those gatherings of the blessed and the unblessed, they do not listen due to the power of the Tathagata. Therefore, observing the particularly wondrous Dharma wheel, in order to be timely and benefit many beings, the great elephant asks about its original nature: 'Manjushri, what is the synonym for the name Buddha?' Briefly showing its nature is: 'What is the synonym for the name self?' The name self is the object of the self that is completely conceived by the non-Buddhists. The name unborn is because no part of the object to be characterized is produced there. What is the synonym for the name self? The name Buddha is also its synonym, which is a synonym for the word its nature. Because there, even a small part of the object to be characterized, which is the cause of the application of sound, is not completely established. Therefore, like this, the name Buddha is a synonym without a basis.' Thus it is shown: 'Because there is no basis in this or on this, it is without a basis, it is its synonym.' Because this makes the meaning understood and comprehended, the basis refers to the word. For what fulfills the hopes of all beings, and for describing the body of the Bhagavan with the nature of wisdom and virtue, there is no related place. However, the foolish children whose minds turn away from the examination of the nature of things, their courage arises naturally, and they correctly cling to 'the name is Buddha.' There is also no reason for the application in what is called Buddha, because it is an indicative synonym, which they fabricate. This second meaning is also shown in relation to the manner of establishment. Among them, first, in order to establish extremely, the name Buddha is difficult to understand with words.' Why? Just like this, even words are difficult to examine 'this is a word,' because it cannot be understood and determined, it is not easy. Then, what to say about the meaning established and indicated by it, the name Buddha? The meaning is like this.

If it is said that the word that expresses is the nature of sound, then is that the characteristic of sound? Or is it a generality, or an image that resides in the mind? None of these are reasonable. Therefore, this is the use of the term 'sound' due to delusion, so you cannot investigate the reality of things by focusing on discerning them. By merely negating the nature of expression, the detailed examination based on it, and the thing to be expressed, are also completely negated. However, in order to negate it and negate it again, for the sake of the second meaning, it is said, "Whatever is not truly established," that is, it is not initially produced from the assembly of conditions. "Unborn" means the unborn that is understood to continuously enter and abide thereafter. "Non-ceasing" means that there is no cessation of continuity. The place of words that take self and so on as characteristics, the Bhagavan who is not associated with any dharma, has no base word. How is it? The base is undifferentiated, so it is undifferentiated by being undifferentiated, up to the universally existing generality. Its base is, connecting the words "this is the place and support," its meaning is that it is without base, without place, and not the object of words. For example, the so-called "Buddha" is its conventional term, which is an imputation due to the practice of wisdom not being completely pure, in order to enter into that reality. Here, the sutra says: Is the meaning to be expressed by words its own self-characteristic? Or is it characteristics and so on? Or is it a generality? Or is it something that has an image in the mind? Regarding this, the self-characteristic is, because it does not exist immediately after birth and so on, it cannot be done, and there is nothing to express. Characteristics and so on are also not true, because they are arbitrarily made by relying on discrimination. If the thing itself exists, then it is the nature of its own self-characteristic, and faults have already been spoken about that. The generality is also, existing in the nature of being separate and so on, it does not exist in the mind, because it has not been experienced from the experience of the mind appearing in various ways. Whatever is merely related to name and is only an image to the conceptual mind, appearing as if it exists outside
