is the all-knowing one, the wise one who benefits all beings. To become possessed of this, to be possessed of all-knowing wisdom, refers to speed. The second case is that, because of becoming very close, it is the only certainty, namely, abiding on the irreversible ground. By showing the complete purification of the pāramitās, it shows abiding in the cloud of dharma, where all the pāramitās will become completely purified. If even mere faith in this category of dharma will lead to the attainment of supreme enlightenment, then why does the noble Mañjuśrī alone teach these for so long? Even after practicing and meditating for a long time, supreme enlightenment has not yet been attained, in order to dispel this doubt. Therefore, the question is asked: Mañjuśrī, what kind of meaning do you see? etc. The words 'I do not wish to fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment' indicate this: If those who rely on you can also attain this without effort, then why do you alone, who have perfected all the accumulations of merit and wisdom, strive with great effort for this? Therefore, is it that you do not wish to attain it because you see a little meaning that depends on others? The answer is: Blessed One, if I were to enter into enlightenment, etc. If I were to truly enter for the sake of enlightenment, then at that time I would wish to manifest it, because effort is not confused with desire. How long? Blessed One, I only aspire to enlightenment, I do not strive for enlightenment. Why is that? This is thinking about how it is reasonable that a bodhisattva does not strive for enlightenment. Thus, Mañjuśrī, the youth, is enlightenment itself. The meaning is this: enlightenment is the nature of wisdom that is free from the elaboration of clinging to appearances that are not truly grasped, etc., and is not the nature of anything else. Mañjuśrī is also only the body of such a nature of wisdom, more than

It is only an example to use obscurations and so forth. Furthermore, one might ask: Is it not reasonable to strive for the absence of obscurations? The answer is no, because one who strives for perfect and complete enlightenment does not have the power to generate it at will. I am merely dependent on the desire to attain it. Therefore, one should not strive for it. Alternatively, in the ultimate sense, since both are inseparable in their own nature of unbornness, it is understood that enlightenment itself is Manjushri. Because of doubting why the noble Manjushri is skilled in expounding the profound, the Buddha said: Manjushri, you are excellent, excellent, to reveal such a profound state. The term "profound" means that it is not an object like coral and so forth. The term "state" refers to direction. The phrase "you are like this" is synonymous with "because of what." Whatever deeds and accomplishments were done by the past Buddhas with the characteristics of generosity and so forth, that is called "like that." Or, what arrangements did the past Buddhas make for the act of teaching the profound Dharma? To practice pure conduct without attachment for a long time is called "like that." Pure conduct is nirvana, and for the sake of that, one practices the perfections and so forth. Because the noble Manjushri has become like that, therefore, "this reveals like that," which is the meaning of the sutra. The noble one also indicates in an indirect way that he is accustomed to non-attachment, and the Bhagavan said: If I practice without attachment, then I will attain the Dharma. What does this mean? It means that if one practices without attachment, if I practice the perfections and so forth, then at that time, I would be clinging to the Dharma and the possessor of Dharma, and I would be clinging to the characteristics of manifestation, and thus I would only attain the Dharma. Because I have abandoned all clinging, therefore, I have not attained anything either. I am also not practicing non-attachment to the perfections and so forth, because the very nature of non-attachment is the nature of the perfections and so forth. The Bhagavan
