If it is not meaningless, then it must have some of its own nature and basis, so what is the self-nature? What is the place? Where does its master belong? The meaning of this statement is the intention of asking. I answer thus: Where does the unborn, the inconceivable belong? It refers to the unborn nature, and the nature where the inconceivable resides, the realm of sentient beings dwells there. The unborn refers to the way mentioned before, which refers to emptiness. It itself is inconceivable, because it is not the place of all thoughts. Where does the nature that can abide reside? I answer thus: The realm of sentient beings dwells where the unborn realm dwells, which is a synonym for saying that there is no place where it does not dwell. Like this, nothing exists except for the unrealistically imputed. The discriminating mind that arises from the imputed is not independent of it either. Remoteness is because of the very nature of remoteness itself. If it is not like this, if it exists with a nature different from remoteness, then it will contradict emptiness. Even if there is no difference, there is no basis and place, because its place is its own different nature. Similarly, the nature of the unrealistically imputed should also be applied to the realm of sentient beings. Therefore, its place does not exist at all. Therefore, if one cannot understand the meaning of the words in which the realm of sentient beings dwells in this situation, and thinks that the place and the things that can know the place are real, then it is difficult for one in a hundred to think and say like this, are the place and the one who can abide not real? If there is nothing that does not exist besides this, then for the sake of practicing what is superior, why is the practice of emptiness taught? Therefore, the Blessed One said, "Manjushri, when you are practicing the Prajnaparamita" and so on. When I am practicing the Prajnaparamita, not clinging, etc., what meaning does this show? Not clinging means that because there is no place and abiding, etc., there is no object to be taken and

Therefore, it is shown that there is no clinging. If there is no clinging, then what meditation is there? To meditate in this way is to repeatedly familiarize oneself, and that is conceptualization, and that is clinging. Like that, because one engages in clinging to the self-appearance of conceptualization as if it were meaningful, even though it is meaningless, therefore it is said, "Manjushri, for one who does not abide, what Prajnaparamita is there to meditate on?" "That which does not abide in anything" and so on is the answer, that which does not abide in anything is to say that whatever meditation is, it is not clinging to anything. In other scriptures, where it says "That which does not abide in anything," it means that there is no clinging to the apprehended, the abiding, and so on. In the initial stage of meditation, conceptualization arises. When one has become accustomed to it for a long time, and it has gone beyond compare and become a state of supreme clarity, "it moves only in that one way" is the condensed meaning. Now, if the meditation on the Prajnaparamita is free from all clinging, then how does the practitioner increase virtuous roots and decrease non-virtuous roots? Some people doubt this, so the Blessed One asked Manjushri, "Manjushri, when you meditate on the Prajnaparamita, at that time, will your virtuous roots increase or decrease?" The word "or" includes the aspect of non-virtuous roots. Blessed One, "at that time, my virtuous roots will increase or" and so on is the answer. Why? It is said: Like this, from where, that is, clinging, with the nature of self and so on, the practitioner meditates on the Prajnaparamita, what related dharma, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, will not increase or expand, nor will it decrease or diminish. Thus it is shown: Any sentient being, endowed with the power of virtuous roots, the practitioner who increases and decreases virtue by the power of meditation, there is nothing other than that virtuous dharma.

However, it is the agent who fabricates based on that very thing. All the mere terms of the agent are in that kind of form. The nature of investigation that follows is not functional. Although that is so, this is also meditation, because these two enter for the sake of increasing and expanding. Because of what reason is it so, therefore, whatever dharma abides closely for the sake of increasing or decreasing, that is what is said, and so on. If it does not enter for the purpose of decreasing or increasing non-virtue or virtue, then how will it gradually abandon the dharmas of ordinary beings, such as desire, and take the Buddha's dharmas, such as powers and fearlessness? Therefore, the Blessed One said, 'One does not abandon the dharmas of ordinary beings,' and so on. What is the reason for that? What is the meaning of 'what is it?' Is it said that because of the power of intense meditation, one abandons the dharmas of ordinary beings and generates the dharmas of the Buddha, and because there is none, there is no abandoning and no taking? Or, by the power of the noble wisdom arising from intense meditation in the manner of non-objectification, when it becomes skillful, then without effort, one will also abandon the dharmas of ordinary beings, and the dharmas of the Buddha will also become manifest. Those are said to be without abandoning and without taking because they do not objectify anything other than themselves, and this is the meaning of completely questioning the reason. In this case, it would follow that there is no state of affliction and purification, therefore it is not like the first case. However, it is like the latter case, so the Blessed One said, 'Thus, knowing
