From the detailed contents arising from the questions and answers of the venerable ones, grasping those up to the chapter of Indra, it should be understood as being definitive. First, to determine the meaning of the teachings, the question of the venerable Subhuti will be explained, beginning with "Thus he asked," and so on. In order for the term Bodhisattva to appear correctly in the context, it is said that the statement in the context precedes it. The meaning of what the Blessed One said, "Whoever calls these Bodhisattvas in this way," and so on, is this: Whatever the Blessed One calls "Bodhisattva, Mahasattva" in order to distinguish that meaning, the Blessed One said "Bodhisattva" in the first statement. Among them, the two words are called "Bodhisattva," and what basic meaning does the word Bodhisattva refer to? The Blessed One taught, "There is no basic meaning," and so on, the meaning is this: Bodhisattvas have four meanings, namely Bodhisattva, the nature of aggregates, conventional Bodhisattva, and ultimate Bodhisattva. All four of these are of the nature of non-entity, therefore the basic meaning of calling it Bodhisattva is that there is no basic meaning, and no basic meaning refers to no place. Therefore, it is said that there is no basic meaning. If Bodhisattva were merely the nature of an entity, then its basic meaning would be with a basis and with a place. Because neither Bodhisattva nor Bodhisattva exists, therefore the basic meaning of Bodhisattva is without a basis, that is, a synonym for non-abiding. The reason given for this is: "What is the reason for that?", that is, "all dharmas," and so on. Among them, "all dharmas" refers to the nature of unconditioned dharmas, therefore the nature of suchness is Bodhi, the nature of imputation and dependence, sentient beings and aggregates, realms, sources, and conditioned dharmas such as dependent origination.

The one with the characteristic of earth is the conventional Bodhisattva; the one with the nature of realizing the Dharmadhatu is called the ultimate Bodhisattva. Regarding all phenomena, the non-attachment to these is to learn in non-existence, therefore it is called the meaning of no basis. Among them, Bodhi is the nature of Suchness, with the non-dual nature, it is the characteristic of non-existence. Because of no substance, the sentient being who becomes non-existent, that is, the conventional Bodhisattva, is also non-existent with the nature of the imputed and dependent. The ultimate Bodhisattva is also the nature of such realization, like the sky, seeing all phenomena as the nature of non-duality, therefore it is said to become non-existent from Suchness. In the previous books, what is the name of Bodhisattva? What is the meaning of the word Bhagavan? The answer of the Bhagavan seen is "in all phenomena" and so on. There are also words of speech about this, or it is said to express this meaning, or it is said that there are four words, what is its meaning? It is the meaning of asking. The answer also shows that because the meaning has no basis, it is to learn in the nature of non-attachment, with the meaning just explained, that is, in all phenomena, the realization of the order of the three natures of the imputed, dependent, and perfectly established is the subsequent realization, in all phenomena, whatever is subsequently realized, that is the meaning, is the means. It is done by seeking the meaning with this. When the non-attachment nature of all phenomena exists, one can manifest the perfect and complete enlightenment of Bodhi. The word "because" is the reason, because it is like this, therefore one learns in the non-attachment nature of all phenomena. Because this one learns without focusing on all phenomena, one can manifest the true Bodhi. Therefore it is said "because of seeking the meaning of Bodhi" and so on, the word "na" is definite. The one who seeks the meaning in Bodhi is the one who desires that meaning. When one learns with the yoga of non-focusing, the Bodhisattva arises.
