If a Bodhisattva cannot thus not perceive, how should he practice the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, for this, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is a beginner should, from the very moment of generating the first mind, train in all dharmas being without object. This means that although a Bodhisattva who is a beginner may not be able to completely perfect the ultimate practice of not perceiving all dharmas, he should still train as much as he can. Therefore, when giving alms, giving alms in a way that does not perceive, and so on, this teaches the method of training in not perceiving, that is, when practicing the six perfections and so on, even if practicing these, one should not regard the practice as real, nor should one be attached to it. The question is, Blessed One, to what extent does it become an object? This is asking what is the difference between perceiving and not perceiving, as previously stated that one should practice the six perfections and so on in a way that does not perceive. The Blessed One said: To the extent that there is duality, to that extent there is perception. Non-duality is non-perception. This is a brief explanation that to the extent that there are two, the grasped and the grasper, operating, to that extent there is perception. Completely abandoning the grasped and the grasper is non-perception. The question is, Blessed One, what is meant by "two"? This is a question raised in order to explain in detail the meaning of the previously briefly stated point. The Blessed One said: To the extent that there is eye and form, and so on, this means that to the extent that there are two, the object to be perceived and the perceiver, to that extent there is duality. The question is, Blessed One, what is it? Is there a non-perception that has an object? No, non-perception is that which has no object. This is because it was previously said that one should practice all dharmas in a way that does not perceive, in order to dispel the thought that some of the audience might think that the so-called non-perception refers to an existing real thing that can be used as an object of practice by some noble ones, so the question is whether the so-called non-perception refers to an object that can be perceived as real?

Is that so? But you said that there is no attachment to things. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the so-called "existence of an object" is not "non-object," and the so-called "non-object" is neither the existence of an object nor the non-existence of an object, but the non-distinction between object and non-object, becoming equality, which is "non-object." Therefore, one should study the equality of object and non-object. The question is, Blessed One, if now a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, while practicing prajna-paramita, is neither attached to the object nor to the non-object, then how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva fully attain the grounds by practicing prajna-paramita? And after fully attaining the grounds, how does one obtain all-knowingness? Since this is the case, if one studies the equality of object and non-object, one should not be attached to anything, and one should not practice anything. In this way, if one does not practice anything, how can a Bodhisattva rise from a higher state to a higher state, and how can one obtain the fruit of practicing these states—all-knowingness? Abiding in the object, one cannot perfect the grounds, etc., which means that if one practices prajna-paramita with an attachment to the object, one cannot perfect the Bodhisattva's grounds, nor can one obtain all-knowingness. Why is that? Because prajna-paramita is also without attachment, etc., which is to explain the reason. Because prajna-paramita, unsurpassed Bodhi, and the Bodhisattva who practices prajna-paramita are, in the ultimate sense, without attachment. The question is, Blessed One, if prajna-paramita is without attachment in this way, etc., if prajna-paramita, etc., are without attachment in this way, then if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva needs to fully understand all dharmas, form, etc., unsurpassed perfect enlightenment

How can one fully understand all phenomena, both mundane and supramundane, up to the attainment of Bodhi? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, how can form become an object of perception? Thus, when a Bodhisattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he should always practice with the understanding that all phenomena are impermanent and imperceptible, and not practice with the notion that they are perceptible or comprehensible. It is taught that way. The question is, Blessed One, if that is the case, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, form is also imperceptible, and so on. If all phenomena are imperceptible, then after perfecting the six perfections, how can one enter the Bodhisattva grounds, purify the Buddha-fields, ripen sentient beings, attain omniscience, and accomplish the deeds of the Buddha, such as turning the Wheel of Dharma? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not practice the Perfection of Wisdom for the sake of form, and so on. The perfection of the six perfections is merely a conventional term in the mundane world. In ultimate reality, there is no Dharma to be accomplished. The question is, Blessed One, for what reason does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom? This is asked in order to distinguish the occasion for explaining the meaning of all phenomena as unmade and unmanifest. The Blessed One replied: For whatever reason a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, since all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, they are practiced and cannot be practiced. Therefore, for no reason does one practice the Perfection of Wisdom. Why is that? Because all phenomena are unmade, and so on.
