When dedicating these roots of virtue, one should dedicate them in this way, from "one should dedicate them in this way" to "views will not be inverted," it is said that when the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, together with the Sangha of Shravakas, who have passed into complete Nirvana, rejoice in these roots of virtue and dedicate the merit, just as those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, together with the Sangha of Shravakas, have passed into complete Nirvana, no longer appear, and are no longer substantial things, so too, these roots of virtue, these dedications, and the minds of dedication, should also be understood to be like Nirvana, without substance in the ultimate truth. Then, in the conventional truth, if one dedicates to unsurpassed Bodhi, because one does not grasp at characteristics, and is endowed with awareness and mind, then the view will not be inverted. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, knows these roots of virtue of those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, in terms of characteristics, then it is not a dedication to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, from "it is not a dedication to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment" to "views will be inverted," it is said that even if one recognizes the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and these roots of virtue in terms of characteristics, the dedication will not become faultless. If one thinks that the past Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are without characteristics and are not objects of characteristics, then merely thinking and generating awareness in this way is also grasping at characteristics, therefore dedicating to unsurpassed Bodhi is not without fault, because awareness, mind, and views will be inverted. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva says the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, etc., from "the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, etc." to "views will not be inverted," it is said that as mentioned above, if one does not grasp at characteristics, then the dedication is completely pure and will not be inverted. Maitreya said: Venerable Subhuti, how can a Bodhisattva Mahasattva not treat these roots of virtue as characteristics and dedicate them to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment?

Saying "dedication" means that if one does not grasp the characteristics of the merits of rejoicing, then one cannot dedicate them. If dedication cannot be done without grasping characteristics, then how can these two not be contradictory? This is the question that is asked. Subhuti replied: Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should learn those skillful means in this Prajnaparamita, which means that they do not grasp things as characteristics, and dedication can also become without fault. This is what skillful Bodhisattvas can do. To be skillful in such means, one must also learn by practicing this Prajnaparamita, which is what is being taught. "One should understand the skillful means of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas from this Prajnaparamita," which means that one should not seek to learn such skillful means elsewhere, but should seek it from this Prajnaparamita itself, which is the reason being explained. "Without relying on Prajnaparamita, one cannot dedicate the objects of virtuous deeds," which means that if one does not realize that all dharmas are without characteristics through wisdom, even if one dedicates merit, the dedication will not become completely pure, which is what is being taught. Maitreya said: If one thinks that "the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are also not present and cannot be found in the Prajnaparamita," and even "the mind of dedication is also not present and cannot be found," wouldn't this become a fault? In this passage, the noble Maitreya raises the doubt that if one thinks that the aforementioned dedication that is without characteristics and unattainable does not exist, would it become a fault? "Therefore, when Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practice Prajnaparamita, they should contemplate in this way," and even "one should dedicate without object and without characteristics." In this passage, the reason why it will not become the fault of seeing emptiness is explained, that is, for all the roots of virtue to be dedicated, if one thinks that things that have ceased and do not exist in the ultimate truth are existent, and clings to characteristics, this is a wrong view, which is condemned by the Tathagatas. Therefore,
