Twenty-fifth, Chapter on Rejoicing and Dedication. Twenty-fifth, Chapter on Rejoicing and Dedication. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya said to Subhuti, from "The Bodhisattva is for the purpose of taming and pacifying all sentient beings, and completely liberating them from suffering," to "The object of meritorious action corresponding to rejoicing is shared with all sentient beings, and dedicated to the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment in a non-objective manner," refers to the merit of rejoicing of ordinary sentient beings, as well as the merit of giving of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, the merit of keeping precepts, and the merit of meditation. The merit corresponding to the Bodhisattva's rejoicing is shared with all sentient beings, and dedicated to the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment in a non-objective manner, thus showing the special excellence and greatness of merit. Mentioning "excellent," "supreme," "principal," etc., are various names of excellence and goodness. In this way, the reason for the special excellence of merit is that the merit done by the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is dedicated for the benefit of oneself alone, while the merit of the Bodhisattva's rejoicing is dedicated for sentient beings, therefore showing the special excellence and greatness of merit. Then, the venerable Subhuti, from "The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya said these words to Subhuti," to "How do those sons of good family regard those objects as signs, do they exist as objects?" refers to the fact that the Bodhisattva Maitreya previously shared the merit corresponding to rejoicing with all sentient beings, and dedicated it to the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment in a non-objective manner, thus showing the special excellence and greatness of merit, and Subhuti grasped the key point and asked. The immeasurable and countless Buddhas, the Bhagavat, in the ten directions, initially to enlightenment

Having generated the aspiration, until the time of complete nirvana and the disappearance of the sacred Dharma, Bodhisattvas rejoice in all the roots of virtue accumulated by those Buddhas, the Bhagavat; they rejoice in the merit of the Hearer Vehicle practitioners' acts of generosity, upholding of moral discipline, and meditative concentration; they rejoice in the stainless roots of virtue of the noble Hearer trainees and non-trainees; they rejoice in the Tathagata's stainless five aggregates; they rejoice in the Tathagata's great compassion that wishes to benefit sentient beings; they rejoice in the immeasurable and countless sacred Dharmas of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and in the Bhagavat's teaching of those sacred Dharmas; having learned the sacred Dharma as it was taught, they rejoice in the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas attaining their respective fruits; they gather together all the roots of virtue that sentient beings have accumulated when the Tathagata was manifestly present and in nirvana; with unsurpassed rejoicing, they share that merit of rejoicing with all sentient beings, and completely dedicate it to the object of merit, the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and to those noble ones who generate roots of virtue, and to the Bodhisattvas who rejoice and completely dedicate merit, are they truly existent as they are renowned and designated? The Venerable Subhuti asked the Bodhisattva Maitreya. If they existed as they are perceived and apprehended as signs, then all phenomena would become substantial entities and would have the fault of having objects of focus. If they did not exist, then there would be no meaning in rejoicing and dedicating those roots of virtue. If one rejoices and dedicates to something that does not exist, then one would be imputing existence to what does not exist, thus leading to a reversed view. This is the question asked by grasping the essential point. Maitreya said: How do those sons of the lineage of the Bodhisattva Vehicle

And it should be contemplated that, just as it is, it is dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Enlightenment. Thus, those things and those objects are not truly existent, meaning that those roots of virtue and the rejoicing, etc., mentioned above, are only contemplated and dedicated in the conventional sense, but are not truly existent in the ultimate sense. Subhuti said: If, as such, things are non-existent and objects are non-existent, then, until such time as that perception is inverted, meaning that if, as such, things are non-existent, then the merit of the Buddhas, Bhagavat, of the ten directions, and the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas rejoicing in the roots of virtue, if it is not dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Enlightenment, then there is no dedication. If it is dedicated in the manner of an object, then one perceives existence in non-existent things, just as one sees permanence in impermanence, sees happiness in suffering, sees self in non-self, and sees purity in impurity, wouldn't perception and views be inverted? Although it is said as such, how are all things, how are objects, how is Enlightenment, how is mind, and how are the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, then what is the thing dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Enlightenment? What is the object? What is Enlightenment? What is mind? What are those roots of virtue? What is the merit possessed by rejoicing? Until how names are nominally established and characteristics are held, just as the unsurpassed Enlightenment and the mind of dedication, and the perfection of generosity, etc., until the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, how all those things are nominally established and characteristics are held, just as if they were truly existent things, then the thing of dedication and the object and Enlightenment and mind and the roots of virtue and the merit possessed by rejoicing are called those things.
