Those ten practices are what the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should do while abiding in the first bhumi. It is said that the Bodhisattva abides in the first bhumi. If one completely practices these ten practices, it indicates that one has correctly entered the Mahayana. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the second bhumi, should repeatedly remember these eight dharmas and diligently practice them. The Bodhisattva abiding in the second bhumi should repeatedly remember and diligently practice the eight dharmas. Now, which eight are they? Namely: Completely pure morality, called the Bodhisattva abiding in the second bhumi, in order to perfect the Paramita of morality, one should make morality completely pure. And completely pure morality means not remembering the mind of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, nor remembering the immoral dharmas that become obstacles to unsurpassed Bodhi. Knowing and repaying kindness, called in order to increase love for all sentient beings, even if one has given a small benefit, one should remember it until the end of samsara, let alone giving a great benefit? One should know and repay kindness, repaying the favor. Abiding in the power of patience, called not observing the faults of sentient beings, and having no intention to harm or injure sentient beings. One should experience great joy and delight, called if one places all sentient beings in the Three Vehicles and makes them completely mature, I will make sentient beings very happy and satisfied. Not abandoning all sentient beings, called the Bodhisattva, in order to accomplish the deeds of sentient beings, benefits and protects all sentient beings without abandoning them. Manifesting great compassion, called the Bodhisattva, although abiding in his own perfect happiness, if he sees sentient beings suffering, he will be touched by great compassion. In order to liberate these suffering sentient beings from suffering, even if I endure the suffering of sentient hells for many kalpas, I will

Until the wisdom of the Buddha is attained, great compassion is manifested, and there is enthusiasm and no weariness in benefiting sentient beings. "Serving the guru and treating him with devotion and respect" means generating faith and respect for the Khenpo and Acharya who teach the sacred Dharma, and serving them. "Diligently seeking the Paramitas" means that in order to fully ripen sentient beings and to fully perfect the aspects of enlightenment, one diligently practices the six Paramitas and accomplishes their meaning. "Subhuti, these eight dharmas are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the second bhumi should repeatedly keep in mind and diligently practice." This means that if one repeatedly keeps these eight dharmas in mind and diligently practices them, it indicates that one has correctly entered the Great Vehicle. "Subhuti, furthermore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the third bhumi should abide in five dharmas," and so on, refers to the five dharmas that a Bodhisattva abiding on the third bhumi should abide in, namely, "not being satisfied with much learning, and not being attached to letters." This means that a Bodhisattva on the third bhumi naturally seeks much learning, and even for the sake of hearing a single verse of the sacred Dharma, even if the three thousand great thousand world system were filled with flames, it is like crossing and walking, and in the conventional truth, one is not satisfied with much learning, but in the ultimate truth, one does not grasp at the characteristics of words and letters, nor does one generate attachment. "Performing the giving of Dharma without mixing it with worldly concerns, and not becoming arrogant because of it" means that after accumulating much learning in this way, when teaching the Dharma to others, one does not even think that the result of teaching the Dharma will be the attainment of unsurpassed enlightenment, let alone thinking of obtaining worldly gain and respect. In this way, there is no expectation for the result of performing the giving of Dharma, and one does not become arrogant because of the giving of Dharma, which is performing the giving of Dharma without mixing it with worldly concerns. "Generating and fully dedicating the roots of virtue for the purpose of completely purifying the Buddha-field.

Furthermore, "not changing pride with that" means that when generating the roots of virtue that make the Buddha-field completely pure, with this root of virtue, when I become a Buddha, may my Buddha-field become completely pure, thus dedicating it completely, but also not being proud and not grasping at characteristics. "Not being completely weary of immeasurable samsara, and not changing pride with that" means that with whatever root of virtue causes sentient beings to become completely mature, and generating such roots of virtue that make the Buddha-field completely pure, one abides in samsara until the all-knowingness is not completely perfected, and without being weary of the long samsara, one generates roots of virtue, but also does not become proud. "Abiding in being ashamed and having scruples, and not changing pride with that" means that if a Bodhisattva does things that are not appropriate, they will be ashamed and worried about scruples. A Bodhisattva generates the mind for unsurpassed Bodhi, and after that, if they generate the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer, the Bodhisattva will be ashamed and have scruples. Therefore, not generating the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer is the Bodhisattva abiding in being ashamed and having scruples. Subhuti, those five dharmas are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should abide in on the third ground, which means that abiding in those five dharmas shows that one has truly entered the Great Vehicle. Subhuti, furthermore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the fourth ground should take up and abide in these ten dharmas, and should not abandon them. Those such as these show what a Bodhisattva abiding on the fourth ground should practice, which means that abiding in a solitary place does not only mean abiding in a forest solitary place, but without mixing with the inferior intentions of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, realizing the selflessness of both person and dharma, and not grasping at any dharma as a real entity, is abiding in mental isolation, which is abiding in a solitary place. Those with few desires, etc., means a Bodhisattva.
