When a great bodhisattva practices the perfection of wisdom, this body also has the element of earth. From there, Subhuti, thus a bodhisattva mahasattva, practicing the perfection of wisdom, whether standing or sitting, observes the body in a non-attached manner, being diligent, possessing mindfulness, and possessing memory, contemplating and practicing worldly attachments and discomfort, until there, this is showing the establishment of mindfulness on the inner body through the observation of the four elements, such as the earth element. This body is the nature of the four great elements, and the four great elements are also of an impermanent nature, so if one realizes that it is not truly existent in reality, in order not to be attached to it, therefore the observation through the elements is shown. The example of the butcher of a bull is shown, just as a butcher clearly sees the meat of a slaughtered animal and distinguishes it, so too, the meditator should clearly realize that his own body is the nature of the four great elements. Subhuti, furthermore, when a bodhisattva mahasattva practices the perfection of wisdom, this body from the soles of the feet upwards, etc., from there, Subhuti, thus a bodhisattva mahasattva, practicing the perfection of wisdom, observes the inner body in a non-attached manner, being diligent, possessing mindfulness, and possessing memory, eliminating worldly attachments and discomfort, and practices accordingly, until there, this is showing the establishment of mindfulness on the body through the observation that the inner body has various impurities. Thus, if one observes that the body is full of various impurities, one will not be attached to the body. The example of a container filled with various grains is shown, just as a farmer is skilled in the types of grains, clearly observes various grains, and distinguishes the types of grains, so too, a meditator meditating on the impurity of the body also makes it clear that the body is full of various impurities. Subhuti, furthermore, when a bodhisattva mahasattva practices the perfection of wisdom,

When practicing, it is like in a cemetery, various corpses are discarded in the cemetery, or placed on a decaying bed, etc. This is to show the practice of mindfulness of the body by focusing on the external body. Seeing the external body in the cemetery, there are new and old, unpleasant, new and old of various kinds, thereby inferring that one's own body also has the same nature. This is to show that the path of the body can be formed. Subhuti, thus, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices Prajnaparamita, regarding the inner body, observing the body in a non-attached way, etc., this is in the manner of the Hinayana scriptures, summarizing and showing the practice of mindfulness of the body. The inner, outer, and inner-outer bodies are as previously described. Regarding inner feelings, observing feelings in a non-attached way, etc., this is in the manner of the Hinayana scriptures, showing the practice of mindfulness of the four: feelings, mind, and dharmas. Their meanings are also as previously described. Subhuti, this is also the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, that is, practicing the four mindfulnesses in the manner of the Hinayana scriptures. This is also because when a Bodhisattva practices Prajnaparamita, through realizing the selflessness of both persons and dharmas, practicing in a non-attached way, thereby becoming the cause of attaining the unsurpassed Bodhi Mahayana, therefore it is called Mahayana, as shown. Subhuti, furthermore, the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is the four right abandonments, etc. This is to show that the four right abandonments are the Mahayana. Through diligence, for unarisen sinful and unwholesome dharmas, not allowing them to arise; for those that have arisen, abandoning them; for unarisen wholesome dharmas, causing them to arise; for those that have arisen, causing them to abide, increase, expand, and perfect. To strive for these is called right abandonment. Among them, diligence also has four types: armor diligence, application diligence, and not

It is the diligence of laziness and the diligence of means. "Generating faith and joy in this" means that one should first do it this way, generating faith and joy and desire in the heart, which is armor diligence. "Effort" means that in accordance with the diligence of putting on armor in this way, abandoning sinful dharmas and cultivating virtuous dharmas, it is called application diligence. "Initiating diligence" is unremitting diligence, even if one encounters difficult and very hard things, one does not lose heart and initiates diligence, so it is called unremitting diligence. Increase the power of the mind. "Making aspirations correctly" is the diligence of means. When practicing meditation and samadhi, if the mind is dull, use means to increase the power of the mind and make it bright. If the mind is scattered, use means to focus the mind on one object. This is called the diligence of means. "Making aspirations correctly" means to skillfully abide in the mind at this time and hold it without distraction. The meaning of Mahayana is as previously stated. Subhuti, furthermore, the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is like this, the four divine feet, etc., which means that the four divine feet are the Mahayana. The so-called divine feet refer to the cause, basis, or support for obtaining supramundane supernatural powers. Therefore, the four samadhis are called divine feet. The four samadhis are the samadhi of faith and joy, the samadhi of mind, the samadhi of diligence, and the samadhi of discernment. The so-called samadhi of faith and joy refers to the great faith and joy that arises when practicing virtuous dharmas. By the power of faith and joy, the mind is equally abiding and becomes focused on one object. This is called the samadhi of faith and joy. The so-called "having the thought of abandonment" means that by the power of practicing samadhi in this way, one will have eight kinds of abandonment practices. What are the eight? They are intention, diligence, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. These eight dharmas can abandon afflictions.
