Chapter Ten: The Path and the Dharani Chapter Ten: The Path and the Dharani Thus, after explaining the Great Vehicle of Samadhi, in order to show that the four mindfulnesses are also the Great Vehicle, (the Buddha) said, "Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is like this: the four mindfulnesses," and so on. Among them, what is the mindfulness of the body? From "What is the mindfulness of the body?" to "Cutting off worldly greed and sorrow, even while acting, one does not discriminate the discriminations associated with the body," this is explaining the mindfulness of the body. Among them, "inner body" refers to being associated with one's own body, mind, and mental factors. "Outer body" refers to the body after death, etc., which is not associated with mind and mental factors. "Inner and outer body" refers to the body of other sentient beings, because it is not one's own body, it is called the outer body; because it is associated with mind and mental factors, it is called the inner body; thus, because it is associated with both inner and outer, it is called the inner and outer body. "In a non-objective way" means that all three bodies, inner, outer, and inner-outer, are not established as truly existent in the ultimate truth, so one does not regard them as real. "Following the body" means that in the conventional truth, relying on the appearing body, one realizes the absence of self and what belongs to self. "Having diligence" means that with regard to not objectifying in the ultimate truth, and following the body in the conventional truth, one is constantly unceasing, and makes great effort, which is diligence. "Having mindfulness" means that with regard to the non-objective object, mindfulness is not confused, and one protects against being disturbed by opposing factors, having mindfulness, not being distracted. "Cutting off worldly greed and sorrow" means explaining the qualities of having diligence, mindfulness, and awareness, abandoning the eight worldly dharmas, which is called cutting off greed and sorrow.

Therefore, one will not develop attachment to gains, fame, happiness, and praise. Conversely, one will experience displeasure towards losses, obscurity, suffering, and criticism. Abandoning these worldly dharmas is called eradicating worldly attachment and displeasure. "Not to conceptualize the conceptualizations associated with the body" means that, conventionally, one observes the body in this way, but ultimately, it is not perceived as such. The meaning of explaining following observation, diligence, possessing mindfulness, eradicating worldly attachment and displeasure, and so on, should be similarly applied to all subsequent content. From "in the manner of not focusing on inner feelings" to "not to conceptualize the conceptualizations associated with feelings," this is the explanation of the mindfulness of feelings. Here, "inner feelings" refers to the feelings arising from focusing on one's own body, namely pleasure, pain, and equanimity. "Outer feelings" refers to the three types of feelings arising from focusing on external objects that are not associated with mind and mental factors. "Inner and outer feelings" refers to the three types of feelings arising from focusing on the bodies of other sentient beings. From "in the manner of not focusing on the inner mind, following the mind" to "not to conceptualize the conceptualizations associated with the mind," this is the explanation of the mindfulness of the mind, as explained in the context of outer, inner, and inner and outer feelings. "Mind" refers to following the mind with attachment and without attachment, with hatred and without hatred, with delusion and without delusion, and so on. From "in the manner of not focusing on the inner dharmas, following the dharmas" to "not to conceptualize the conceptualizations associated with dharmas," this is the explanation of the mindfulness of dharmas, with inner, outer, and inner and outer being as previously explained. "Dharmas" refers to the aggregates, elements, sources, and so on, which are worldly dharmas and aspects of enlightenment.

Etc., are for the supramundane dharmas. Thus, after explaining the four mindfulnesses in the manner of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, in order to explain the mindfulness of the body arising from the Hearer Vehicle, (the Buddha) said, "Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice contemplating the body in the inner body?" etc. Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva walks, he knows that he is walking, from this beginning, Subhuti, now when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, he contemplates the body in the inner body without attachment, with diligence, with mindfulness and awareness, removing worldly attachment and displeasure, and practices, up to this point, the mindfulness of the body is explained through the four postures. Among them, there are two types of postures: major postures and minor postures. Among them, major postures are when walking a long distance, walking, standing, sitting, and sleeping, whatever the body's posture is doing, one should abide in mindfulness without distraction, that is, Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva walks, he knows that he is walking, from this beginning, up to the explanation of removing worldly attachment and displeasure and practicing. Subhuti, furthermore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva contemplates the body in the inner body without attachment, and practices, walking or looking elsewhere, he also practices with awareness, up to abiding inwardly as it is, he also practices with awareness, this is the explanation of minor postures, that is, going from one village to another, when staying in one place, walking and sitting in the vicinity, etc., being cautious and abiding in mindfulness, is called minor postures, walking or coming, the above refers to walking and coming from one village to another. Walking etc., the following refers to walking and coming when acting in the vicinity.
