That which is called 'unconditioned' means that it is not produced by the aggregation and collection of causes and conditions. The suchness of phenomena such as form is emptiness, and because its nature does not change, it is called 'suchness.' Although that suchness is completely encompassed as being inherently inseparable, nevertheless, its basis, the five aggregates such as form, the twelve sources, the eighteen elements, the six elements, and the twelve links of dependent origination, are divided into various categories. Therefore, various distinctions are taught, such as the suchness of form and the suchness of feeling. The so-called Bodhisattva is neither that suchness itself, nor is it different from that suchness. It does not abide in that suchness, nor does that suchness abide in the Bodhisattva. It also does not exist as an entity in something else that does not belong to any of those. It should be understood that it is taught in this way. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what meaning do you see in saying that form is not a Bodhisattva, and that the suchness of old age and death, which does not exist, is also not a Bodhisattva? The Blessed One said to Subhuti: Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that form is a Bodhisattva? And so on, he asked. Subhuti replied, repeating his words: No, Blessed One. The Blessed One further said: What meaning do you think of when you say that neither the nature of conditioned things such as form, nor the nature of unconditioned things such as the suchness of form, are Bodhisattvas? Nor are they different from those. The Bodhisattva is not in them, nor are they in the Bodhisattva. Their non-existence is also not a Bodhisattva? This is asking for the reason. Subhuti said: Blessed One, since a Bodhisattva is completely non-existent and cannot be found, how can the mere term 'form' be transformed into a Bodhisattva? And how can the non-existent suchness of old age and death be transformed into a Bodhisattva? Because it does not exist. Up to: Subhuti, why do you...

etc., are not Bodhisattvas." If asked for the reason, the answer is: "The very name 'Bodhisattva' also does not exist in reality, because it is empty of inherent existence. If it is completely non-existent, how can the conditioned dharmas such as form, or the unconditioned dharmas such as the Suchness of form, become Bodhisattvas?" This shows that there is no such place. "There is no such place" means that there is no such possibility. The Blessed One said: "Well done, well done, Subhuti! A Bodhisattva Mahasattva, because they do not perceive sentient beings, should train in the Perfection of Wisdom in this way." This shows that because they do not perceive sentient beings, they are encouraged to strive diligently, which is the conclusion of the exhortation. It means that having realized that the Perfection of Wisdom and the Bodhisattva are both without any object of perception in reality, for the sake of maturing sentient beings in conventional truth, they are encouraged to strive only in name and designation. This is "well done!" Having praised it, he said, "You should train in this way." Subhuti, if someone were to say, "The name 'Bodhisattva', what dharma is it a designation for?" up to "The designation of consciousness without aspiration, one should train in the Perfection of Wisdom." This says that the Blessed One previously asked Subhuti, "The name 'Bodhisattva', what dharma is it a designation for?" Among the assembly, some thought that although the Bodhisattva is empty of inherent existence in reality, such as the five aggregates, it seems to have inherent existence in name and designation. To dispel their thoughts of addition, he taught the instruction of not perceiving designations. That is, the designation of the five aggregates such as form, and the designation of considering the five aggregates such as form as the four perversions such as permanence, and the designation of considering the four antidotes to the four perversions as impermanence, and the designation of the three doors of liberation such as emptiness, and the non-
