Seeing that many sentient beings would thereby fully mature, the Blessed One addressed the venerable Subhūti, saying, “Subhūti, inspire the great bodhisattvas to undertake the perfection of wisdom, ensuring by all means that they engage in the perfection of wisdom. Generate the courage to expound such teachings of the Dharma!” Thus spoke the Blessed One. The phrase “engage in the perfection of wisdom” refers to practicing the perfection of wisdom and realizing its meaning, thereby attaining the highest state, which is called “accomplishment.” The term “teachings of the Dharma” refers to the exposition of the teachings on diligence that will follow. Then, those great bodhisattvas, those great hearers (śrāvakas), and those sons of the gods thought thus: “Since the elder Subhūti is a śrāvaka, limited to knowing the teachings of the Śrāvaka Vehicle, is he expounding the teachings of the Mahāyāna Dharma through his own intellect, or is he teaching through the blessing of the Tathāgata?” They harbored such doubts. Thereafter, through the power of the Buddha, from the phrase “through the power of the Buddha” up to “teaching the perfection of wisdom to the great bodhisattvas, which is not within the scope of all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas,” the elder Subhūti, having perceived the thoughts of the assembly with his mind, explained, “This exposition of the Mahāyāna Dharma is not based on my own wisdom or courage but is taught through the blessing and power of the Tathāgata.” The elder Subhūti is, in fact, a great bodhisattva who has accumulated the stores of merit and wisdom over countless eons and has attained patience with profound teachings. Yet, abiding in the Śrāvaka Vehicle, he disciplines sentient beings in the form of a monk…

Its meaning is that, by teaching in the manner of a Hearer, (if I) say that these are my own words, for fear that some in the retinue might become disrespectful and unfaithful, therefore, (I) declare that these are the words of the Blessed One, not my words. Sharadvatiputra, this is precisely how the Tathagata teaches the Prajnaparamita to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas through skillful means. In this way, through the blessing and power of the Tathagata, letting Subhuti speak the Dharma is precisely teaching through skillful means. Blessed One, if we call a Bodhisattva a Bodhisattva, for example, calling a Bodhisattva, or calling Prajnaparamita, what Dharma's terminology is this? etc., this is the Venerable Subhuti asking in order to distinguish the occasions of the four exhortations: exhorting diligence through mere designation by name and term, exhorting diligence by not focusing on sentient beings, exhorting diligence by not focusing on terminology, and exhorting diligence by not focusing on all Dharmas. Blessed One, if we call a Bodhisattva a Bodhisattva, or call Prajnaparamita, like that, I do not truly see, etc., this is Subhuti, relying on the ultimate truth, (if) the Bodhisattva and Prajnaparamita have nothing to focus on in the ultimate sense, then who will teach whom? Subhuti, for example, Prajnaparamita, Bodhisattva, and what is called the name of Bodhisattva, these are just names, this name is neither inside, nor outside, nor can it be focused on as being both absent, from here on, until Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing in Prajnaparamita, should understand in this way the Dharmas designated by name and term, in between is showing exhorting diligence through the designation of name and term, Subhuti, for example, Prajnaparamita, Bodhisattva, and what is called the name of Bodhisattva, these are just names, this name is neither inside, also

There is not. There is also not outside. Not apprehending even the absence of both, this indicates that the Blessed One taught based on both conventional and ultimate truths. Although bodhisattvas and others, in ultimate reality, are not apprehended as being inside, outside, or both inside and outside, in conventional reality, for the sake of fully maturing sentient beings, they are taught and subsequently shown by merely designating names and symbols. Subhuti, it is like this: for example, the name 'sentient being, sentient being' is merely a designation. Similarly, Subhuti, whatever is the Perfection of Wisdom, whatever is the Bodhisattva, and whatever is the name of the Bodhisattva, all of these are merely designations. For any designated dharma, there is no arising or ceasing, except for being designated by name and symbol. That name is not inside, nor is it outside, nor is it apprehended as being absent in both. Up to here, although the designations of self, sentient being, person, etc., by the non-Buddhists are not truly existent, in conventional reality, self and sentient being are designated as names and symbols, just as they are explained and refuted. Bodhisattva, Perfection of Wisdom, and the name of Bodhisattva, even if they are not truly existent in ultimate reality, in conventional reality, they should be named and spoken of as names and symbols. Subhuti, it is like this: for example, what is named as internal form is merely a designated dharma. Subhuti, it is like this: for example, whatever is external grass, trees, branches, leaves, petals, all of these are spoken of with various names, and these are also merely designated by name and symbol, other than that, there is no arising or ceasing. That name is not inside, nor is it outside, nor is it apprehended as being absent in both. Up to here, the worldly dharmas, the five aggregates, the twelve sources, the eighteen elements, the form of the internal body, and the external plants, etc., although they are not truly existent in ultimate reality, in conventional reality, with names and symbols
