Since phenomena are not established as truly existent, their nature of arising or ceasing is also not established. One should not apply the term "form that has passed." One should not apply the term "future," and so on, up to "omniscience that has passed" should not be applied, "future" should not be applied, "presently arising" should not be applied. This section demonstrates the characteristic of diligence by abandoning conceptual elaborations regarding the distinctions of form and other phenomena in the three times. It is to counteract the assertions and conceptualizations of the Shravaka proponents, such as the Sarvastivadins, who say that past form exists as something that has already been done, future form exists as something that will be done, and presently arising form exists as something that is being done. Since form itself is not established as truly existent in the ultimate sense, the qualities and distinctions of form, such as having been done, will be done, and being done, are also not established. Because one does not grasp at characteristics, one does not apply them to the three times. Similarly, one should apply this up to omniscience. One should not apply the terms "form is permanent" or "impermanent," and so on, up to "omniscience is permanent" or "impermanent" should not be applied. This is to counteract ordinary beings who view form and other phenomena as permanent and substantial, and Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who view them as impermanent and insubstantial, like empty husks. Since form and other phenomena are not established as truly existent in the ultimate sense, their qualities and faults, permanence and impermanence, are also not established because they are not truly existent. Therefore, the characteristic of diligence is demonstrated by abandoning such conceptual elaborations. Just as with form, one should apply this to all phenomena up to omniscience. One should not apply or differentiate "form exists" or "does not exist," and so on, up to "omniscience exists" or "does not exist" should not be applied or differentiated. This is to counteract the conceptualization of form and other phenomena at the extremes of existence and non-existence.

This demonstrates the characteristic of diligence by abandoning the object. The term "non-joining" means not striving due to attachment to the extremes of existence and non-existence. The term "non-discrimination" is the opposite of that, meaning not discriminating even against non-joining. Therefore, in conventional truth, one must understand the characteristics of existence and non-existence of all phenomena, and then, through skillful means, strive without attachment to them. When practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, one does not fixate on "practice," one does not fixate on "non-practice," one does not fixate on "practicing even while practicing, not practicing even while not practicing," one does not fixate on "neither practicing nor not practicing." This demonstrates the characteristic of diligence by abandoning the four types of conceptualization regarding characteristics such as practice and non-practice. Among them, "not fixating on practice" means that, as explained above, even for those who possess the characteristics of practice and diligence, if they practice in this way, they will fall into practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, and therefore they do not fixate on signs. The term "not fixating on non-practice" is the opposite of the former, meaning that even for those who do not possess the characteristics of diligence, one does not fixate on "this person practices" or "does not fall into diligence." The term "not fixating on practicing even while practicing, not practicing even while not practicing" means that in conventional truth, one falls into non-practice, but in ultimate truth, one does not fall into practice, and therefore one does not fixate on signs. The term "neither practicing nor not practicing" means that from the first conceptualization, the top and bottom are reversed, meaning that in ultimate truth, it is neither practicing, nor in conventional truth, is it not practicing, and therefore one does not fixate on signs. Not falling into these four conceptualizations means falling into the characteristic of diligence in the Perfection of Wisdom. For the purpose of the Perfection of Generosity, the Perfection of Wisdom

This is the teaching on the characteristics of diligence, that all dharmas are without difference in the nature of emptiness, because it is unreasonable to grasp at differences. So, why is that? When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, there is no view of difference, distinction, or particularity in any dharma, this is the reason given. If there were different things such as the Prajnaparamita and the Dana Paramita, then it would be appropriate to say that one practices one in order to accomplish one. However, since all those dharmas are inseparably of the same nature in ultimate truth, one does not practice one for the sake of another, that is the meaning. From 'one does not practice the Prajnaparamita for the sake of the divine eye' to 'one does not practice the Prajnaparamita for the sake of the knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements', the characteristic of diligence is taught through abandoning the conceptualization of striving for higher knowledge. Why is that? Because like this, when practicing the Prajnaparamita, 'even the Prajnaparamita itself is not truly seen', and so forth, this is the teaching of the reason why the dharmas of higher knowledge and the Prajnaparamita itself are not established in ultimate truth, the absence of difference is the same as previously stated. Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, they do not think, 'I will abide in the miraculous feet, and in the world realms of the eastern direction as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, I will attend to, honor, respect, and make offerings to all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, as many as there are.' From not thinking like that, until 'I will completely liberate countless sentient beings from suffering', they do not think like that, this is the teaching of the characteristic of diligence through abandoning the conceptualization of making offerings and showing respect to the Buddhas of the ten directions by the power of having attained the six higher knowledges, and of completely ripening sentient beings. The rest is self-contradictory, sentient beings completely from suffering
