When meditating on the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, if one does not have a virtuous friend and relies on evil companions, one will fixate on those dharmas as real entities, and one will become arrogant with those dharmas. Because one is unskilled in means, one will not dedicate the roots of virtue to omniscience. This is what is shown. Thus, one should be skilled in the means of abandoning evil companions who cause such transformations. This is what is taught. Question: "Lord, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, being influenced by evil companions, become frightened, alarmed, and terrified upon hearing this exposition of the Perfection of Wisdom, and fall into the hands of evil companions?" From the statement, "These should not be taught to others," to "Subhuti, this should be recognized as an evil companion of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva," it shows the evil companions who cause Bodhisattvas to turn away from practicing the six perfections. Subhuti, furthermore, an evil companion of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is like this: evil demons transform themselves into the appearance of a Buddha. They come to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva and cause them to turn away from the six perfections and to have no faith, saying, "What benefit will you gain from meditating on the Perfection of Generosity?" Thus, they do not show the actions of demons, and they do not show the faults of demons. From the statement, "Subhuti, this should be recognized as an evil companion of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva," it shows the actions of demons who transform themselves into the appearance of a Buddha and cause Bodhisattvas to turn away from meditating on the six perfections. Such actions of demons, if they are not shown and explained to the Bodhisattva beforehand, then that person is not a virtuous friend, and therefore is an evil companion. This is what is taught. Subhuti, furthermore, evil demons transform themselves into the appearance of a Buddha and go to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with the qualities of a Hearer.

Do (དོ།) and, 'declared with melody,' etc., up to, 'not speaking or showing such actions of demons should be known as the sinful friend of a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva,' is saying that evil, sinful demons transform into the guise of the Buddha, elaborately teach the twelve branches of scripture belonging to the Bodhisattva Śrāvakayāna, and prevent the activities of the Mahāyāna. Not showing such actions of demons is also not a spiritual friend, thus showing that they themselves are sinful friends. Among these, 'Sūtra' means whether it is spoken by the Buddha or spoken by a Śrāvaka with the Buddha's permission, it simply shows the meaning briefly. 'Declared with melody' refers to expressing the meaning of the spoken Sūtra with song. Another situation is that the words appearing in the Sūtra are not spoken directly, but in a euphemistic way, and there are other places that need to be explained and elaborated. Therefore, in order to declare and explain its meaning, it is called 'declared with melody.' 'Prophecy' refers to specifically predicting the past, future, and present conditions of Bodhisattvas and Śrāvakas, as well as future changes, etc., therefore it is called 'prophecy.' 'Verses' refer to explaining the meaning of the Sūtra in the form of two, three, four, five, or six-line verses, therefore it is called 'verses.' 'Self-utterance' is not spoken for the sake of someone, but for the purpose of the Buddha's teachings remaining in the world for a long time, and is spoken proactively without being requested by others. This is called 'self-utterance.' For example, in the afternoon, the Blessed One arose from meditation, sat on his seat, and said self-utterances to the assembly of monks, as stated in the scriptures. 'Origin story' refers to where the Sūtras and Vinaya, etc., were first spoken from, such as, 'This is the basis, this is the occasion, and the precepts were established when this event occurred,' etc. 'Thus, the past' refers to repeating and telling past events. 'Birth story' refers to the Blessed One.

It tells where the Bodhisattva was born and what kind of asceticism he practiced when he practiced the deeds of the past. The so-called "very extensive" refers to the elaboration of the meaning of the sutras and the very extensive explanation. The so-called "wonderful Dharma" refers to the incredible wonders of the wisdom, supernatural powers, and blessings of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Shravakas. The so-called "narrating realization" means that in order for the listeners to understand and realize, the things that have been experienced before are narrated, and metaphors are used to narrate and make them realize. The so-called "determination" refers to the detailed analysis of the meaning of the sutras, so as to determine it, and to explain it according to its meaning, similar to the Abhidharma. The so-called "narrating, explaining, distinguishing, clarifying, and completely narrating" refers to the various ways of explaining the sutras belonging to the Shravaka vehicle. The reason for listing them in this way is so that some of the listeners can understand, and others will be able to understand in the future. Furthermore, Subhuti, those evil demons disguised themselves as Buddhas and went to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, saying: 'Good man, you don't even have a little Bodhicitta.' And so on, some evil demons will turn into the appearance of a Buddha and say to the Bodhisattva: 'You have neither Bodhicitta nor are you a non-retreater, so you cannot attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, give up!' Not telling such demonic deeds is also showing that they are evil friends. Furthermore, Subhuti, those evil demons disguised themselves as Buddhas and went to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, saying: 'Good man, the eye is selfless or not mine.' Even, 'The Buddha's unshared Dharmas are selfless or not mine.' If it is so selfless or not mine, then what is the use of attaining Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi?' Not telling such demonic deeds,
