Extensive Commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom Extensive Commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom First, the Introductory Chapter Extensive Commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom. Homage to youthful Manjushri! The essence of wisdom, the lord of the gone beyond, I respectfully pay homage to the mother of the Victorious Ones. In order to benefit myself with the words of the lama, I wish to compose this commentary on the treatise, destroying the opposing forces. In order to protect the form body of the Tathagatas and the assembly of the sacred Dharma, the noble Bodhisattva Vajrapani, Maitreya asked within the retinue, and by the words "Thus I have heard," it is promised that I have heard the explanation of the Perfection of Wisdom. Why is it not said, "The Bhagavan spoke thus"? Because what the Bhagavan spoke is not the realm of activity of Vajrapani's own nature. Thus, the Bhagavan, to the various lineages of discipline, intentions, behaviors, beliefs, and faculties gathered from various world realms, in a single instant, with distinctions such as impermanence, suffering, emptiness, selflessness, non-arising, non-cessation, primordially peaceful, and naturally nirvanic, and distinctions such as aggregates, elements, sense sources, dependent origination, and noble truths, and distinctions such as mindfulness, perfect exertion, miraculous feet, and faculties, and distinctions such as the ten powers, four fearlessnesses, and eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, with various languages, various doors, various sounds, various miracles, various entrances, and various attainments of results, teaches with a single wisdom in that very instant, because so much is not the realm of activity of Vajrapani. Therefore, it is not said, "The Bhagavan spoke thus," but in order to show that it has become a small part in my realm of activity, it is said, "Thus I have heard." Thus, by what is it manifested?

In the Secret Sutra of the Tathagata, it says: Peaceful Wisdom, in the immeasurable and countless realms of the ten directions, the realm of sentient beings known by the wisdom of the Buddha is very vast, unlike the realm of earth. Peaceful Wisdom, if all those sentient beings were to attain human bodies without any precedence, Peaceful Wisdom, all those sentient beings would be like this: possessing wisdom and knowledge like that of the venerable Shariputra. The wisdom and knowledge of all those sentient beings like Shariputra, if that wisdom and knowledge were present in one sentient being, in this manner, all sentient beings would possess such wisdom and knowledge. Peaceful Wisdom, all those sentient beings would contemplate, measure, and thoroughly seek doubts and questions for more than a kalpa. The doubts of one sentient being, in a manner that is not a second, Peaceful Wisdom, all sentient beings would contemplate various different doubts, and then go to the Blessed One. Even if doubts were to fall like hailstones, the Blessed One, with a single mind of continuous mindfulness, would grasp all their doubts, and with a single utterance, would sever all doubts. All of them would know that their doubts have been eliminated, and upon hearing the Blessed One's answers, all would be delighted. And so on. Therefore, the order of teachings given by the Tathagata to those who are to be tamed is such that it does not become the sphere of activity for Bodhisattvas who gather the Dharma. The Blessed One did not say, "Thus it was spoken," but only to show how much I have experienced and how little I have heard, therefore it is said, "Thus have I heard." The meaning of "At one time" is at one of any given times. Why was the time not specified? Because specifying the time is not of great importance. Alternatively, it was also to avoid disputes, so the time was not specified. For example, the Tathagata...

That is, at the moment, in an instant, in various worlds and various places, for bodhisattvas or other beings, teaching the Dharma to various beings to be tamed, manifesting various forms. If bodhisattvas or other beings, all sentient beings to be tamed gather in one place, they will argue or hesitate, saying, 'At that time, the Tathagata was in a certain world, in a certain place, we were there, we were there.' To avoid such doubts, all those who compiled the sutras did not specify a time. Another explanation is that because the Buddha resided in Rajgir many times, there is the saying 'at the time of residing in Rajgir.' 'Bhagavan' refers to the one who has subdued the four maras. Another explanation is that 'Bhagavan' also refers to the one who possesses the place to be relied upon. There are six kinds of places to be relied upon, namely, power, wisdom, fame, splendor, merit, and diligence. The Tathagata possesses these places to be relied upon, hence he is called 'Bhagavan.' 'Residing in Rajgir' means that the place where the Bhagavan resided has become a stupa, and in order to increase the merit of sentient beings, the place is clearly indicated. Residing in that place also has four ways: residing by conduct, residing by teaching the Dharma, residing by entering into samadhi, and residing by entering into right concentration. Among them, all that belongs to the activity of the body is residing by conduct. All that belongs to the activity of speech is residing by teaching the Dharma. All that belongs to the activity of mind is residing by entering into samadhi and residing by entering into right concentration. Among them, constantly entering into equanimity and entering into samadhi is residing by entering into samadhi. Contemplating the world with great compassion, and in order to provide opportunities for gods and others to come, residing alone in a quiet place is residing by entering into right concentration.
