Is held. These dharmas cause sentient beings to wander in samsara and fall into evil destinies, hence they are called exhaustion of outflows. Absence of afflictions refers to abandoning and eliminating the all-pervasive afflictions of karma, the all-pervasive afflictions of afflictions, the all-pervasive afflictions of the ripening aggregates, and the all-pervasive afflictions of birth. Among these, the all-pervasive afflictions of karma refer to the afflictions caused by performing virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral actions of formation. The all-pervasive afflictions of afflictions refer to afflictions such as desire. The all-pervasive afflictions of ripening refer to the five aggregates that are the basis of suffering and become the source of afflictions. The all-pervasive afflictions of birth refer to experiencing much suffering when emerging from the mother's womb. The absence of these is called absence of afflictions. Mastery refers to possessing four masteries. What are the four? They are mastery over miraculous powers, mastery over the senses, mastery over samadhi, and mastery over wisdom. Among these, with mastery over miraculous powers, one becomes master of the sentient world and the container world. With mastery over the senses, one brings joy to the world through gentle and peaceful conduct. With mastery over samadhi, one becomes master of one's own mind. With mastery over wisdom, one eliminates all afflictions, karma, and ripening, and attains independence as if liberated from bondage. Extreme liberation of mind refers to showing that all afflictions and near afflictions belonging to the side of craving have been abandoned. Thus, having attained liberation of mind, it is shown that one has become liberated from the obscurations of meditative absorption. Extreme liberation of wisdom refers to showing that the afflictions belonging to the side of ignorance have been abandoned. Thus, having attained liberation of wisdom, because all afflictions have been abandoned, it is shown that one has become liberated from the obscurations of afflictions. Knower refers to the fearless one. Therefore, in the sutras it is also said: Because of fearlessness, theref

For example, the five kinds of fearlessness that are spoken of: because of the fear of the sounds that come from the tongue, etc., the king of the herd is fearless; because of the fear of battle, the horse and the elephant are fearless; because of the fear of being harmed by others, the lion is fearless; because of the fear of death, the Arhat is fearless. Here, the term "fearless" indicates the absence of four anxieties. What are the four? They are the anxiety of suffering, the anxiety of fear, the anxiety of worldly dharmas, and the anxiety of ignorance. Among these, because there is no sorrow or lamentation, no suffering or displeasure, there is no anxiety of suffering. Because there is no self-deprecation, no other-deprecation, no falling into the lower realms, no poverty, no fear of being punished, no fear of being known unfavorably, and no fear of death, there is no anxiety of fear. Because one is not tainted by gain and loss, fame and infamy, praise and blame, pleasure and pain, there is no anxiety of worldly dharmas. Because there is no ignorance, no knowledge accompanied by doubt, and no wrong knowledge, there is no anxiety of ignorance. Therefore, because there is no such anxiety, it is called fearless. The term "great elephant" means "great lord," because one has obtained the dharma that distinguishes differences, it is called a great elephant. The phrase "done what is to be done, doing what has been done" indicates the qualities of completely perfecting all that is to be done. For the principal of action, what cannot be left undone is called "to be done." Incidentally, "to be done" is called "doing," and for the principal of action, what cannot be left undone is also the act of completely perfecting discipline, samadhi, and wisdom, thereby liberating oneself from all suffering. Those who have completely perfected these are called "done what is to be done." Incidentally, "to be done" is to reduce desire, to be content, to abide in the qualities of training, to please all sentient beings, and so forth. Those who have completely perfected these are called "doing what has been done." Therefore, the phrase "done what is to be done, doing what has been done" indicates the aspect of what is to be accomplished.
