To distinguish the section on thoroughly explaining the skillful means of teaching between "Who is that wise one," Subhūti asked, and the Blessed One answered: A Bodhisattva who has newly entered the Mahāyāna, who is not skilled in means in the Perfection of Wisdom, and who does not possess a virtuous friend, will become frightened, alarmed, and terrified upon hearing this profound Dharma being taught. One who has entered the Mahāyāna for a long time, who is skilled in means in the Perfection of Wisdom, and who possesses a virtuous friend, will not become frightened, alarmed, and terrified. The mention of these three—frightened, alarmed, and terrified—explains fear as being of three types: superior, intermediate, and inferior wisdom. Initially, at the time of hearing, slight fear is fear. After that, at the time of thinking, intermediate fear is alarm. Finally, at the time of meditating, extreme fear is called terror. This teaching on skillful means is also shown in four aspects: being skilled in the means of individually examining all phenomena; being skilled in the means of completely perfecting the six perfections; being skilled in the means of relying on a virtuous friend; and being skilled in the means of abandoning sinful friends. Regarding this, the Blessed One said: Subhūti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with a mind endowed with all aspects of knowledge, he examines form as impermanent, but does not fixate on it... up to examining consciousness as isolated with a mind endowed with all aspects of knowledge, but does not fixate on it. Subhūti, this is the skillful means of a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Up to this point, the skillful means of individually examining all phenomena has been taught. Being skilled in the means of individually examining phenomena means that with a mind endowed with all aspects of knowledge, one individually examines the five aggregates, such as form, as impermanent, suffering, selfless, peaceful, emptiness, signless, wishless, unconditioned, and isolated in conventional truth, but that is also ultimate

is to train without focusing on the invisible. Among them, "with the mind possessing all-knowingness" means with the intention to attain all-knowingness in conventional truth, contemplating impermanence etc. on the five aggregates, and also training without focusing on the invisible in ultimate truth. Here, with the mind possessing all-knowingness, contemplating that form is impermanent, saying that it is invisible, etc., and with the attention possessing all-knowingness, contemplating the aspect of form being impermanent, saying that it is invisible, etc., the two explanations seem to be repeated twice. The previous explanation of the mind possessing all-knowingness, form being impermanent, etc., is that without equally abiding in the coarse worldly mind, one separately contemplates impermanence etc. on form etc. The later explanation of the attention possessing all-knowingness contemplating the aspect of form being impermanent etc., is that one equally abides in the subtle transcendental mind, meditation, and samadhi, therefore contemplating the aspect of impermanence etc. on form etc., so it is not repeated twice, there is that difference. Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva thinks in that way, thinking: teaching all sentient beings about the impermanence of form in an invisible way, etc., is showing the skillful means to perfect the six paramitas. Among them, teaching all sentient beings about the impermanence of form in an invisible way, etc., until, Subhuti, this is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva's perfection of giving, because of it, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not be afraid, will not be frightened, will not be terrified, etc., is showing the skillful means to perfect the perfection of giving. Among giving, the giving of Dharma is supreme, and teaching the Dharma to all sentient beings in an invisible way is not skilled in the skillful means to perfect the perfection of giving.

Yes. Because of having this, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not be afraid, will not be frightened, will not panic. This means that if one possesses the skillful means to perfect the perfection of generosity, even if one hears the profound Dharma, one will not be afraid, frightened, or panic. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, because he does not have the attention of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha, he attends to the impermanent aspect of form and so on in a non-apprehending manner, and so on. Subhuti, this is the unequaled Perfection of Morality of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Because of having this, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not be afraid, will not be frightened, will not panic. In between, it is said that the skillful means to perfect the Perfection of Morality have been shown. Not having the attention of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha means that because one has not realized the selflessness of phenomena, one does not have an apprehending thought, and one clings to the idea that the peace of Nirvana of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha is sufficient, and one does not strive to attain the state of omniscience. One does not have such a narrow-minded idea. Abandoning the narrow and apprehending mind of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha, and attending to omniscience in a non-apprehending manner, this is not contrary to the conduct of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Therefore, it has been shown that this is the skillful means to perfect the Perfection of Morality. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with respect to the impermanent aspect of these dharmas, and so on, this is the Perfection of Patience of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Because of having this, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not be afraid, will not be frightened, will not panic. In between, it is said that the skillful means to perfect the Perfection of Patience have been shown. With respect to these dharmas, this refers to the five aggregates of dharmas mentioned above, with respect to these dharmas.
