This shows the fruit that is in accordance with the cause of the perfections. Teaching the Dharma for the benefit of sentient beings, and the diligence of practicing austerities being spontaneously accomplished, one will not become weary and discouraged with whatever one does. Even if one practices for many eons, one will not have the perception of it taking a long time. Therefore, countless eons also easily pass and are exhausted, or one is skilled in causing them to arise from that. Thus, after showing the qualities of those who have definitely entered the practice of the ninth ground Bodhisattva, in order to show the qualities of the tenth ground Bodhisattva who is obstructed by one birth, it is said that "understanding all as illusion, mirage, moon in water, dream, echo, optical illusion, sky, city of gandharvas, emanation, and reflection." That is, the Bodhisattvas abiding on the tenth ground, although they realize that all dharmas are without substance in the ultimate sense, in the conventional sense, the actions of offering and honoring the Tathagatas, purifying the Buddha-fields, and maturing and liberating sentient beings, by the power of previous aspirations and the force of practice, arise spontaneously without the need to seek or strive. And, for those actions, one does not grasp at substance and characteristics, and one practices without attachment, because one understands all dharmas as illusion, mirage, and so on. The reason for showing the ten types of similes such as illusion is to dispel the thoughts and various doubts of the beings to be tamed. All dharmas are empty by nature. If there is no substance, why do various appearances such as color and shape appear? For this thought, the simile of illusion is shown. For example, the various things made by a magician, such as horses and elephants, although they appear with various distinctions such as color and shape, they do not actually exist. Similarly, all dharmas also appear as things such as color and shape, but they do not actually exist. Some sentient beings think that all dharmas are without

If one thinks that mind and mental events arise dependent on something, then the example of a mirage is shown. Although there is no actual water in a mirage, the perception of water arises dependent on it. Similarly, mind and mental events arise. All phenomena also lack intrinsic substance; although they are not objects of focus, sentient beings mistakenly cling to them in a reversed manner, and from this, mind and mental events arise. If all phenomena lack substance, how do birth and destruction occur? To this, the example of the moon in water is shown. For example, if the moon appears in the sky, then the moon will also appear and be visible in the water; if the moon does not appear in the sky, then the moon in the water will also not exist and not be visible. Similarly, the appearance of birth and destruction of all phenomena is also because there is a habitual tendency of reversed clinging; if those habitual tendencies are purified and no longer exist, then birth and destruction will also not appear. All phenomena are by nature empty and without substance, so how do worldly conventions such as eating and drinking arise? To this, the example of a dream is shown. For example, in a dream, various appearances such as eating and drinking, giving and receiving, happiness and suffering appear, but they are not of the nature of substance. Similarly, although all phenomena lack substance in ultimate truth, the various appearances of worldly conventions are like a dream. If all phenomena lack substance, how do collections of names and combinations of words arise? To this, the example of an echo is shown. For example, an echo arises from a rock and a hollow valley without speech, which is produced by the condition of other sounds. Similarly, from the delusion of the discriminating consciousness that clings to sound, collections of names and combinations of words arise, but in reality, there is no substance whatsoever. If all phenomena lack substance, how do they arise from causes and conditions? To this, the examples of eye disease, the sky, and a city of gandharvas are shown. For example, due to the cause of having an eye disease,
