This shows the meaning of "exists." However, the word "exists" is not applied to things that truly exist. It refers to "as non-existent, so true" or "as such, the very truth." Therefore, in order to clearly explain this meaning, it was said, "Because it is not existent in that way, it is called non-existent." "Venerable One, for what reason do we say that what is not present is 'not present'?" This was asked in order to extensively explain the reason why forms and other phenomena are not existent. The Blessed One replied, "Sharadvatiputra, form is emptiness of the interior..." and so forth, this is by mentioning the eighteen emptinesses as the reason why forms and other phenomena are not existent, and showing, "Because it is emptiness, it is not existent." Just as with form, likewise, from feeling and so forth up to aging and death, worldly phenomena, and from the perfection of generosity up to the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, are shown to be non-existent. Therefore, ordinary beings cling to what is non-existent, thereby clinging to craving... up to clinging to the unshared qualities of a Buddha. This shows that, in reality, phenomena are not truly existent, but ordinary beings, due to the power of ignorance, see things perversely, clinging to extremes such as permanence and annihilation, thereby clinging to phenomena. "Clinging to what is non-existent, thereby clinging to craving," means that due to the power of perverse views, they see what is non-existent as existent, thereby generating craving and clinging. "They thoroughly examine what is non-existent," this shows that these ordinary beings perversely see what is non-existent as existent, thereby thoroughly examining and clinging to various things and characteristics. "Because of clinging to the extremes of annihilation and permanence, they do not know, they do not see," this shows that due to the power of perverse views, they cling to the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, thereby falling into the fault of wrong views. "Having thoroughly examined those non-existent phenomena, they cling to name and form," this

The explanation is: From seeing what is non-existent as existent in a reversed way, thereby clinging to the phenomena of samsara such as the five aggregates, this is what is to be shown. The terms "name" and "form" refer to the five aggregates. The four, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, are formless, merely names, so they are called name. The aggregate of form is existent as form, so it is called form. Therefore, the terms name and form refer to the five aggregates. Those who cling to the perfection of generosity, etc., are showing that those ordinary beings, due to seeing non-existence as existence in a reversed way, see pure phenomena as having substance and cling to them. Those who cling in this way completely conceptualize phenomena that are non-existent. They do not know or see those. From "not arising from the ground of a Hearer" to "not arising from the ground of a Solitary Buddha," it is said that due to clinging to phenomena that are non-existent, they do not realize the phenomena of the world and beyond as they truly are, and they do not arise from the three realms, the ground of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and they also belong to the ranks of ordinary beings. Those people do not believe. How do they not believe? From "form is empty of form" they do not believe, to "omniscience is empty of omniscience" they do not believe, it is said that due to not realizing the true meaning, they do not have faith in the ultimate reality, and therefore they do not believe that phenomena such as form, which are worldly, and phenomena such as the perfection of generosity, which are beyond the world, are empty of inherent existence. Those are also not abiding. How do they not abide? From "not abiding in the perfection of generosity" to "not abiding in the unmixed qualities of a Buddha," it is said that due to not believing that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, and not possessing skillful means and wisdom, they do not
