That is how to practice. That is to say, even if one practices what is called the practice of the Perfection of Wisdom, it is still practicing on characteristics. That is what is taught by "One should know that the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is unskilled in means." Among them, to practice on form with unskilled means is to practice on characteristics, etc., which means that for the five aggregates, if one contemplates on the characteristics of what is the nature of each of form, etc., then that is practicing on characteristics, not practicing on the Perfection of Wisdom, this is what is taught. World-Honored One, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, practices with unskilled means, saying that form is permanent, then that is practicing on characteristics, etc., which means that for the worldly dharmas such as aggregates and realms, and the transcendental dharmas among the eighteen unshared Buddha dharmas such as the Perfection of Giving, if one holds and establishes characteristics such as permanence and impermanence, pleasure and pain, self and non-self, peace and non-peace, seclusion and non-seclusion, then that is practicing on characteristics, not practicing on the Perfection of Wisdom. If one practices in this way, then that Bodhisattva is unskilled in means, so one should abandon that unskilled means, this is what is taught. After that, the Venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, how should one know the unskilled means of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? And so on, Venerable Sharadvatiputra, if that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not even have a share in realizing the Hearer's Ground or the Solitary Buddha's Ground, let alone realizing the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, that is absolutely impossible. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, one should know that it is unskilled in means, and so on, which teaches that one practices on manifest activity with unskilled means. The so-called "attachment to form" means that one sees form as real and is attached to it with inverted views.

That too. Cognition, called inverted cognition, clings to characteristics such as good and bad. Blessing is called mind inversion, clinging to and dwelling in the substance of form. To act on the manifestation of form means to see form as having substance with such inverted views, inverted cognition, and inverted mind. If one acts in this way, one acts on the manifestation of the arising and destruction of form, but not on the meaning of Prajnaparamita. That is, one cannot be liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, passing away, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and disturbance, and it is said that one cannot be liberated from great suffering. It shows the fault of manifesting and acting on form, meaning that one cannot be liberated from samsara and attain liberation. Likewise, it should also be applied to feelings, etc., up to the eighteen unshared dharmas of the Buddha. The son of the Venerable Sharadvatiputra, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva has no share in attaining the Hearer's Ground or the Solitary Buddha's Ground, what need is there to say that he will attain Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment? It means that if one acts on the manifestation of dharmas in this way, it shows the fault of not being able to obtain the fruit of liberation. That has no place, meaning that if one clings to dharmas as things and acts on manifestation, it is impossible to attain Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. It is said: Venerable Subhuti, how should a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva act on Prajnaparamita, knowing it as skillful means, etc., which shows the establishment of acting with skillful means. Among them, there are also two kinds of acting with skillful means: not acting on dharmas and not acting on the characteristics of dharmas. Among them, Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, when a Bodhisattva
