Up to the point of "not being a place," the Venerable Subhuti, understanding the thoughts of the assembly, said: "This discourse on the Dharma of the Great Vehicle is not from my wisdom and courage, but is shown through the blessing and power of the Tathagata." This Venerable Subhuti is a great Bodhisattva, who has accumulated stores of merit and wisdom from countless kalpas and has obtained patience with the profound Dharma. However, for the sake of those beings who abide in the Hearer Vehicle and are disciplined by the precepts of a monk, he manifests in the form of a Hearer and claims that these are his own words. In order to avoid some in the assembly becoming disrespectful and distrustful, he declares: "This is the teaching of the Bhagavan, not my words." The son of Sharadvati said: "The Tathagata teaches the Prajnaparamita to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas by means of skillful means." Thus, by the blessing and power of the Tathagata, Subhuti is made to give a Dharma discourse, and this itself is teaching by skillful means. "Bhagavan, we call a Bodhisattva a Bodhisattva. For example, what Dharma terms are these that we call a Bodhisattva or Prajnaparamita?" etc. This is the question posed by the Venerable Subhuti in order to encourage diligence through mere names and designations, to encourage diligence through not focusing on beings, to encourage diligence through not focusing on terms, to encourage diligence through not focusing on all Dharmas, and to distinguish the occasions for the four encouragements. "Bhagavan, we call a Bodhisattva or Prajnaparamita, but I do not truly rejoice in such things," etc. This is Subhuti, based on the ultimate truth, asking, "If there is nothing to focus on in the ultimate sense of Bodhisattva and Prajnaparamita, then who should encourage whom?" "Subhuti, for example, Prajnaparamita, Bodhisattva, and the name of Bodhisattva, those are names

It is just a name. That name is neither inside nor outside, nor can it be determined that both are absent. From this sentence, until Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practices the Prajnaparamita, one should understand in this way the dharmas that are designated by names and symbols. In between, it is taught to encourage diligence merely by names and designations. Subhuti, for example, Prajnaparamita, Bodhisattva, and the name of Bodhisattva, these are just names. That name is neither inside nor outside, nor can it be determined that both are absent. With this sentence, the Blessed One spoke based on both the conventional and ultimate truths. Bodhisattvas, etc., in the ultimate sense, whether inside or outside, or neither inside nor outside, are not attainable, but in the conventional sense, in order to fully mature sentient beings, they are designated merely by names and symbols, thereby exhorting and teaching. Thus it is said. Subhuti, for example, sentient beings, sentient beings, the name designated as a name is merely a designation, from this sentence, until Subhuti, similarly, whether it is Prajnaparamita, or Bodhisattva, or the name of Bodhisattva, all of these are merely designations. For any designated dharma, apart from merely naming it with names and symbols, there is neither birth nor cessation. That name is neither inside nor outside, nor can it be determined that both are absent, up to this sentence, although the self, sentient beings, and persons, etc., designated by non-Buddhists are not truly existent, in the conventional sense, the names and symbols are designated as self and sentient beings, etc., as said and refuted, even though Bodhisattva, Prajnaparamita, and the name of Bodhisattva do not exist in the ultimate sense, in the conventional sense, they should be named and spoken with names and symbols, as taught. Subhuti, for example, the name called internal form is merely a designation of dharma, from this sentence, to Subhuti, for example, any external...

Grass, trees, branches, leaves, and petals, all of these are referred to by various names. However, these are only designated by names and symbols; in reality, there is no arising or ceasing. This name is neither within nor without, nor can it be found in between. Up to this point, the worldly five aggregates, twelve sources, eighteen realms, as well as the inner form of the body and the outer plants and trees, although they do not exist in the ultimate truth, in the conventional truth, just as they are referred to by names and symbols, bodhisattvas and prajnaparamita should also be taught merely by names and symbols. For example, the name of the past Buddha Bhagavan also exists, and so on. The past names of the emanation body and dreams, etc., are not established in either conventional or ultimate truth, but as an example of designation, bodhisattvas, etc., should be designated and taught in the conventional truth. Therefore, Subhuti, when a bodhisattva mahasattva practices prajnaparamita, he should learn the designation of names and symbols, as well as the designation of instructions and the designation of dharma. This means that although in the ultimate truth, bodhisattvas, etc., are not established as real, in the conventional truth, in order to fully ripen sentient beings, they should be instructed by merely designating names and symbols. This is shown by summarizing the meaning. Subhuti, a bodhisattva mahasattva, practicing prajnaparamita in this way, will not truly see form as permanent. And so on, as mentioned above, it teaches that all dharmas are merely imputed, and that the fruit of abandoning all discriminations will be attained. Therefore, one will not truly see form as permanent. One will not truly see form as impermanent, until one will not truly see form as unpeaceful. This is because the non-Buddhists consider form to be permanent.
