Regarding discipline and asceticism as supreme, and doubt, these three. These three afflictions do not liberate beings, but bind them in samsara, therefore they are called fetters. The five lower fetters are: the view of the perishable aggregate, holding to discipline and asceticism as supreme, doubt, desire for desire, and malice. The five higher fetters are: desire for the realm of form, desire for the formless realm, agitation, pride, and ignorance. Kauśika, from here I have not been obscured by the Buddha's eye, in the eastern world as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, countless immeasurable beings are practicing unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, but because they do not possess the skillful means of the Perfection of Wisdom, only one or two of them will abide in the irreversible ground, while most of them will abide in the ground of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, I have seen. Kauśika, from here I have not been obscured by the Buddha's eye, in the upper world as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, countless immeasurable beings are practicing unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, but because they do not possess the skillful means of the Perfection of Wisdom, only one or two of them will abide in the irreversible ground, while most of them will abide in the ground of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, I have seen. Why is that? Kauśika, unsurpassed perfect enlightenment is difficult to achieve for those who are lazy, without diligence, weak-minded, difficult to believe, and of shallow wisdom. Even in the ten directions of the world, there are many who practice the Lesser Vehicle, but those who possess the skillful means of the Perfection of Wisdom and practice the Great Vehicle are few and rare. Kauśika, therefore, sons or daughters of good family, those who have truly entered unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, they will quickly and easily attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.

Now, one should repeatedly listen to this Prajñāpāramitā. From "The eighteen unshared dharmas of the Buddha, and also all the immeasurable dharmas of the Buddha that are contained within this Prajñāpāramitā, should be grasped, should be held, should be recited, should be completely understood, should be properly contemplated," it means that because this Prajñāpāramitā is of great benefit, one should repeatedly listen, grasp, hold, and so on. Why is that? Kauśika, those sons or daughters of good family will understand in this way, from "Even those who have entered the stream have reached the other shore, have reached the other shore, will reach the other shore," they will understand. This is to explain the reason for listening to this Prajñāpāramitā and so on. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat of the three times, as well as the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, also because they have trained in this Prajñāpāramitā and the Buddha dharmas contained within it, will attain the ultimate of all Buddha dharmas, they will understand. Therefore, one should listen to this Prajñāpāramitā and all the Buddha dharmas contained within it. Kauśika, therefore, those sons or daughters of good family, whether the Tathāgata resides or not, whether the Tathāgata has entered Parinirvana or not, should rely on this Prajñāpāramitā. From "They should rely on their omniscience," why is that? Kauśika, this omniscience is the support of all Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas, it is the support of beings such as gods, humans, and asuras. As mentioned above in order, this Prajñāpāramitā and all the Buddha dharmas are taught by the Tathāgatas, Śrāvakas, and Pratyekabuddhas, and also by those who practice the sacred Dharma.
