Bhikkhu Subhuti, this is neither a designation of dharma nor a designation of non-dharma. For example, the term 'sentient being, sentient being' is merely a name temporarily assigned, a name assigned without substance, a name assigned without an object of focus. This is because, in ultimate truth, sentient beings have no inherent existence, thus demonstrating the boundless reason. If there were some inherent existence of what is called 'dharma,' then it could be said to be a designation of that dharma. However, in ultimate truth, since there is no inherent existence of what is called 'dharma,' it cannot be said that these sentient beings are designations of that dharma. Similarly, since the existence of dharma is not established, its opposite, non-dharma, also does not exist, so it cannot be said to be a designation of non-dharma. Therefore, it is shown that these so-called sentient beings, in ultimate truth, are without inherent existence and without an object of focus, and are merely names temporarily assigned in conventional truth. Subhuti said: Kausika, what do you think? Is there any sentient being spoken of in this Perfection of Wisdom? And so forth, meaning that even in this Perfection of Wisdom, sentient beings are not spoken of as existing in ultimate truth. Subhuti said: Kausika, where no sentient being is spoken of, it is said that there are infinite sentient beings, because in this Perfection of Wisdom, sentient beings are not spoken of as having inherent existence, and that which has no inherent existence is infinite, thus demonstrating this meaning. Kausika, if the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One were to abide for as many eons as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, and were to speak of 'sentient being, sentient being,' Kausika, what do you think? Would there be any sentient being who would arise or cease? This is because it is shown that the so-called sentient being is merely a name spoken in conventional truth, and is not truly existent in reality, so Indra was asked. He replied: Bhikkhu Subhuti, there is not. Why is that? Because sentient beings are primordially completely pure. This means that, in ultimate truth, sentient beings are empty of inherent existence, and whatever is empty of inherent existence is primordially completely pure.
