The meaning of not abiding in the manner of an object of focus was concluded by Subhuti and taught to Indra. Thus, not abiding in any dharma is abiding in the Perfection of Wisdom, as was taught. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra thought to himself, "How should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the Perfection of Wisdom?" This means that it is also explained that one should not abide in any dharma such as form, and it is also explained that one should abide in the Perfection of Wisdom, but since one cannot abide even in emptiness, how should one abide in the Perfection of Wisdom? Thus he realized. Then, the venerable Subhuti, knowing the mental thoughts of the venerable Sharadvatiputra, said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Where does the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, abide?" This is because Subhuti asked Sharadvatiputra where the Tathagata abides in order to show that not abiding in anything is abiding in the Perfection of Wisdom. The Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, also understands in the ultimate sense that all dharmas are without substance, and not abiding in any dharma in the manner of an object of focus is abiding in the Perfection of Wisdom, as was taught. He said, "Venerable Subhuti, the Tathagata does not abide anywhere." This is Shariputra's answer to Subhuti's question of where the Tathagata abides, meaning that he does not abide in any dharma. Venerable Subhuti, the mind of the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, does not abide, which shows the reason for not abiding anywhere. The mind of the Tathagata does not grasp the characteristics of any dharma, and does not abide in the manner of an object of focus, as was taught. He does not abide in form, he does not abide in feeling, and so on, up to not abiding in omniscience, which is where the Tathagata's mind is.

The term "I do not abide" indicates the specific dharmas in which one does not abide. It means that the Tathagata does not abide in those dharmas—from form and so forth up to all aspects of omniscience—in the manner of focusing the Tathagata's mind, because all those dharmas are not established as truly existent in ultimate reality. Subhuti said: Son of Sharadvatiputra, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the Perfection of Wisdom? The Tathagata does not abide in form, nor does he not abide in form, and so forth, up to not abiding in all aspects of omniscience, nor not abiding in non-all aspects of omniscience. This is to abandon the two extremes of abiding and not abiding. The Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, does not abide in form and so forth, nor does he not abide in form and so forth; thus, it should be done. "Not abiding" means that in ultimate reality, all dharmas such as form are empty of inherent existence, and therefore it is not possible to abide in them. "Nor not abiding" means that in conventional truth, one abides in mere worldly designations and imputations, and therefore it is not not abiding. Son of Sharadvatiputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should train and abide in the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, with this mode of focus. This is a concluding explanation of the meaning of being free from the two extremes, as explained above. Just as the Tathagata has abandoned the two extremes of abiding and not abiding, not abiding in abiding, nor not abiding in not abiding, so too should a Bodhisattva train and abide. Then, from within that assembly, some sons of the gods thought, and so forth, which is to show that the profound meaning of the Perfection of Wisdom cannot be reached by words and is inexpressible. That is, if the yakshas' yaksha words, yaksha sounds, yaksha noises, and yaksha expressions are spoken, they can be understood. But the Perfection of Wisdom of the noble Subhuti
