Because there is no entity. If it is unborn, then what is there to say with the word "unborn"? This is the question. Venerable Subhuti, are you also confident in speaking of the unbornness of the unborn dharmas? This is to say that even the form and other dharmas that are unborn are without entity in the ultimate sense, because they are unborn. In that case, is it permissible to say "unborn" of something that has no entity? This is the question. Subhuti said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, are you confident in saying "unborn dharma, unborn dharma"? This is to say, Venerable Sharadvatiputra, I have no confidence in speaking of "unborn dharma, unborn dharma." This is Shariputra's answer to the previous question, that the dharmas of birth and non-birth are without entity in the ultimate sense, and they are unborn. My saying it is merely a way of expressing meaning through words in the conventional sense, but in the ultimate sense, I have no confidence in speaking. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, I have no confidence in speaking of the unbornness of the unborn dharmas. This is Shariputra's answer to the latter question, that saying "unborn" of form and other dharmas that are unborn is merely a way of expressing meaning through words in the conventional sense, but in the ultimate sense, I have no confidence in speaking. What is the reason for this? Venerable Sharadvatiputra, like this, whatever is the unborn dharma, whatever is unborn, whatever is confidence, whatever is speaking, all these unborn dharmas are neither existent nor non-existent, they are formless, invisible, and unimpeded. Like this, without characteristics, they are of one characteristic. This explains the reason for not being confident in speaking of "unborn dharma," that is, form and other unborn dharmas, as well as the nature of unborn dharmas, and the speaking without confidence, all these are merely nominal designations in the conventional sense. In the ultimate sense, they are not entities.

That is why it is said so, and the meaning of having and not having, etc., is as mentioned above. Shariputra said: "O venerable Subhuti, what does it mean to say 'unborn'? Wisdom is also unborn, and Dharma is also unborn. From what starting point are those Dharmas of wisdom that are spoken of also unborn?" The so-called speaking, wisdom, birth, and non-birth, and the Dharmas such as form, etc., from what starting point are those Dharmas that are spoken of and give rise to wisdom, neither existent nor non-existent? If they are measured as formless, invisible, and unobstructed, then are those also unborn? This is what Shariputra asked. Subhuti said: "O venerable Shariputra, it is just so. To say 'unborn,' etc., refers to those things that are spoken of by the name of Dharma, such as speaking, etc., which are unborn in the ultimate sense. Why is that? O venerable Shariputra, for example, form is unborn, feeling is unborn, etc., which means that these speaking and wisdom, etc., are not only unborn in the ultimate sense, but also all Dharmas, such as form, etc., up to all-knowingness, both mundane and supramundane, are also unborn." O venerable Shariputra, therefore it is said that speaking is unborn, wisdom is also unborn, and Dharma is also unborn. From what starting point are those Dharmas of wisdom that are spoken of also unborn? This is a summary of the meaning of what was said above, and it is declared that all those Dharmas, such as form, etc., up to all-knowingness, are unborn in the ultimate sense. Speaking, etc., also belong to those Dharmas, therefore it is said that these speaking, etc., are also unborn in the ultimate sense. Shariputra said: "O venerable Subhuti, you are the most excellent among the speakers of Dharma. Why is that? For example, whatever the venerable Subhuti is asked, he has no obstruction in that." This is Shariputra's praise of Subhuti, all Dharmas.
