Asked: If not, are these five destinies different in conventional truth but not different in ultimate truth in the terminology of the world? Replied: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, it is so. Just as attainment and realization exist in the terminology of the world, so too are the five destinies different in the terminology of the world, but not in ultimate truth. This is because in ultimate truth, they all have the same taste in the nature of unborn, and there is no distinction. It is only in conventional truth that beings are guided and tamed, and names and signs are taken and designated as mere terms. Why is that? Venerable Sharadvatiputra, in ultimate truth, there is no action, no ripening of action, no birth, no cessation, no affliction, and no purification. This is to show the reason why the five destinies are not different in ultimate truth. The so-called five destinies are merely divided and designated as five different categories of gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings based on the ripening of well-performed and ill-performed actions. But in ultimate truth, there is no action or ripening of action, so the five destinies are not different. Asked: Venerable Subhuti, will an unborn dharma be born? Or will a born dharma be born? This is because Shariputra asked Subhuti in order to explain in detail the reasons why neither unborn nor born dharmas of the world and beyond will be born. Unborn dharma is without substance, like a rabbit's horn, so it is impossible to be born. Born dharma has already become a substance, so there is no need to be born again, so he asked that way. Subhuti replied: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, I do not think that unborn dharma will be born, nor do I think that born dharma will be born. This is because in ultimate truth, both born and unborn are empty of nature, so neither will be born. This is a brief answer. Asked: Venerable Subhuti, will an unborn dharma be born?

The question "What is it that does not desire to be born?" is asked by Shariputra to Subhuti in order to specify by name and lead to an explanation of what is called "the unborn dharma," in order to distinguish the occasion. Subhuti said: "O son of Sharadvati, endowed with life, I do not desire that form, which is unborn and empty of its own nature, be born," and so on, up to "O son of Sharadvati, endowed with life, I do not desire that all-knowingness itself, which is unborn and empty of its own nature, be born." This is Subhuti's answer to Shariputra's question, "What is it that does not desire the unborn dharma to be born?" It shows that all those worldly dharmas, such as the five aggregates, and all those transcendental dharmas, such as the six perfections, up to all-knowingness itself, do not desire to be born because they are empty of their own nature in the ultimate sense. The question "O Subhuti, endowed with life, what is it that does not desire the born dharma to be born?" is asked by Shariputra to Subhuti in order to specify by name and lead to an explanation of what dharma Subhuti previously said "the born dharma also does not desire to be born." He said: "O son of Sharadvati, endowed with life, I do not desire that form, which is born and empty of its own nature, be born," and so on, up to "O son of Sharadvati, endowed with life, I do not desire that the born all-knowingness itself, which is empty of its own nature, be born." This is the answer to the question "What is it that does not desire the born dharma to be born?" It shows that all those worldly dharmas, such as the five aggregates, and all those discriminations of the transcendental dharmas as born in the conventional sense, up to all-knowingness itself, do not desire to be born because they are empty of their own nature in the ultimate sense. Thus, if it has been shown that the dharmas of the world and beyond, such as form, which are born and unborn, are unborn in the ultimate sense, then, in order to show that the nature of what is called birth and non-birth is also unborn, he says: "O Subhuti, endowed with life, does birth arise? Or does it not..."

The birth called "birth" is Shariputra's question to Subhuti. He said: "O son of Sharadvati, birth is not born, and non-birth is not born. These so-called birth and non-birth are merely nominal terms in the conventional sense. But in the ultimate sense, neither of these two has real existence, so it is said to be unborn." This is to explain this principle. Why? O son of Sharadvati, thus, whether it is birth or non-birth, these two dharmas are neither associated nor unassociated, colorless, invisible, and unimpeded. Thus, without characteristics, they are of one characteristic. This is to explain that the dharmas of birth and non-birth do not have real existence in the ultimate sense, and to explain the reason for non-birth. The so-called "neither associated" is to explain that things arising from the mind are not visible. The so-called "also not unassociated" means that the phenomena of actions that are not associated with the mind are also not visible. The so-called "colorless" is to explain that the form aggregate is not a real thing. The so-called "invisible" means that it cannot be indicated in the nature of color and shape. The so-called "unimpeded" is to explain that things with obstacles, such as the eye faculty, are also not real. The so-called "thus, without characteristics, they are of one characteristic" means that, as such, whether associated or not, and whatever characteristics of form, etc., are not, and in the ultimate sense, in the nature of emptiness, they are of one characteristic. O son of Sharadvati, therefore, birth is not born, and non-birth is not born. This is Subhuti summarizing and explaining the meaning of what was said. Because the reason for non-birth is such, therefore the dharmas called birth and called non-birth have no birth in the ultimate sense. Sharadvati's son said: "O venerable Subhuti, you say 'unborn dharma, unborn dharma,' do you have confidence?"
