is clinging to the view of self. If one clings to the view of self, one will not desire the liberation of the Dharma of the selflessness of the person. If one holds moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, one will hold that it is sufficient to rely solely on moral discipline and asceticism, and one will not cultivate the noble path. Doubt will cause one to hesitate about the noble path. These three dharmas are the opposing aspects of the noble path. Because they are the cause of beings being born in samsara, they are called "fetters." The once-returner cultivates the path because of the weakening of desire, hatred, and delusion, meaning that if all dharmas are no different in the nature of non-substantiality, then what is the use of the once-returner of the Hearers cultivating the noble path in order to weaken desire, hatred, and delusion? Because merely seeing the dharmas such as form has already cultivated the noble path. This is its meaning. The non-returner cultivates the path because of abandoning the five fetters of the non-superior division, meaning that if all dharmas are no different in the nature of unborn and emptiness, then in order to abandon the five fetters of the non-superior division, there is no need to cultivate the noble path. The so-called "non-superior division" refers to the desire realm, because it is evil and inferior compared to the two upper realms of the form realm and the formless realm. The so-called "five fetters of the non-superior division" refers to the five afflictions belonging to the desire realm, which are: the view of the perishable aggregate, holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, desire for desire, and anger. The meaning of the fetters is as previously explained. The Arhat cultivates the path because of abandoning the fetters of the superior division, meaning that if all dharmas are no different in the nature of unborn and emptiness, then what is the use of the noble Arhat cultivating the noble path in order to abandon the afflictions of the form realm and the formless realm? The so-called "fetters of the superior division" refers to the five afflictions of the form realm and the formless realm.

Furthermore, those also, the desire for the realm of form, and the desire for the formless realm, and agitation, and pride, and ignorance, etc., that is, the meaning of universally binding, as previously explained. If one enters the Pratyekabuddha vehicle, it is said to cultivate the path for the sake of Pratyekabuddha enlightenment, etc., meaning the Pratyekabuddha cultivates the path in order to obtain the fruit of Pratyekabuddha enlightenment, and the Bodhisattva practices austerities for the sake of sentient beings, and the Tathagata manifests complete enlightenment of unsurpassed Bodhi and attains Buddhahood, and what is the meaning of turning the wheel of Dharma, etc.? Having spoken thus, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Venerable Saradvatiputra, "Thus," and so forth, up to "The unborn do not desire to have a Pratyekabuddha, do not desire to have Pratyekabuddha enlightenment," etc., meaning the establishment and distinction of the stream-enterer of the Hearers, etc., are merely nominal designations in conventional truth, and it is shown that they do not desire those to exist in ultimate truth. The meaning of attainment and comprehension, attainment is said to be for the sake of attaining the fruit of stream-entry, etc. Comprehension is said to be for the realization of the nature of the noble path, showing that they do not desire those attainment and comprehension to exist even in ultimate truth. The Venerable Saradvatiputra, "I do not desire the Bodhisattva Mahasattva to practice austerities," etc., meaning the Bodhisattva has obtained forbearance of non-arising dharmas, therefore he does not view the object of austerities as existing. In order to clarify that meaning, it is said that the Bodhisattva Mahasattva also does not engage in the perception of austerities, etc., showing that he does not view the object of austerities as existing in ultimate truth, and also, in conventional truth, with great compassion, he generates the perception of parents, etc., towards all sentient beings, therefore the perception of austerities does not arise. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates such a mind, thus, what is called "I, I," etc., all of that is non-existent and unattainable in every way, likewise, external and internal.
