Thus, all phenomena are seen as inverted from the absence of entity, and suffering arises from clinging to existence. This is not truly existent in the ultimate sense, so it is shown to be without entity and exhausted. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, all phenomena are without self, not separate from anything, etc. This is to show that all are of the nature of non-entity from the perspective of selflessness. From the five aggregates of form, etc., to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, the term "selflessness" means that these do not have inherent existence. It does not mean that they are separate from the self that is clung to by the heretics who call emptiness "selflessness." Venerable Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, all phenomena are the quiescence of speech, not separate from anything, etc. This is to show that all phenomena are of the nature of non-entity from the perspective of quiescence. All these phenomena, from the five aggregates of form, etc., to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, are without inherent existence in the ultimate sense and are quiescent from the very beginning, therefore they are called quiescent. It is not that they become quiescent by separating from the opposing side of existence, as is shown. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, all phenomena are emptiness, not separate from anything, etc. This is to show that all phenomena are of the nature of non-entity from the perspective of the doors of liberation: emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. All these phenomena, from the five aggregates of form, etc., to the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, are not established as inherently existent in the ultimate sense, they are emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. But it is not that they are empty by being separate from other entities, signless by being separate from signs, and wishless by being separate from wishes. Rather, because they are inherently empty, inherently signless, and inherently wishless, it is shown that all phenomena are of the nature of non-entity. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, all phenomena are virtuous, not separate from anything, etc. This is from the perspective of virtue,

etc., up to the unshared Buddha-dharmas, is shown to be the nature of non-substantiality. The saying, "not separate from anything," does not mean that there are some non-virtuous things, and being separated from them is called virtuous, but rather that all dharmas are non-substantial and empty, and because of their self-luminous nature, they are virtuous. Why is that? Sharadvatiputra, endowed with life, for example, the so-called non-substantiality and exhaustion of virtue means that the meaning of virtue is non-substantial and self-luminous, which is a conclusive demonstration. Sharadvatiputra, endowed with life, all dharmas are faultless, and the saying, "not separate from anything," etc., from the perspective of faultlessness, shows that form, etc., up to the eighteen unshared Buddha-dharmas, are the nature of non-substantiality. The saying, "not separate from anything," does not mean that there is a dharma called fault, and being separated from it is called faultless, but rather that what is empty and pure by nature is called faultless, which is what is to be shown. Sharadvatiputra, endowed with life, furthermore, all dharmas are uncontaminated, and the saying, "not separate from anything," etc., from the perspective of uncontamination, shows that form, etc., up to the eighteen unshared Buddha-dharmas, are the nature of non-substantiality. It is not that being separated from the contaminated dharmas that are the cause of samsara is called uncontaminated, but rather that it is called uncontaminated because it is pure from the beginning, therefore it is the nature of non-substantiality, which is what is to be shown. Sharadvatiputra, endowed with life, furthermore, all dharmas are without affliction, and the saying, "not separate from anything," etc., from the perspective of being without affliction, shows that all dharmas are the nature of non-substantiality. It is not that being separated from afflictions such as desire becomes without affliction, but rather that it is without affliction because it is peaceful from the beginning, which is what is to be shown. Sharadvatiputra, endowed with life, furthermore, all dharmas are purified, the so-called
