In the unestablished Perfection of Wisdom, is it possible to posit the name of a Bodhisattva? The term Bodhisattva is merely a name and convention in the relative truth; ultimately, its nature is not established. This is an example taken from the immeasurable aspects conceived by non-Buddhists. If, when taught in this way, the heart of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not shrink back, does not utterly shrink back, does not regret, and whose mind is not frightened, does not panic, and does not fear, then that Bodhisattva Mahasattva is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. That is to say, when teaching such profound Dharma that is without any object of focus, if the mind does not become dejected and frightened, then one is truly practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. This is showing the subsequent praise of forbearance in the profound. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the venerable Subhuti, "Venerable Subhuti, why do you say that? If, when taught in this way, the heart of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not shrink back, does not utterly shrink back, does not regret, and whose mind is not frightened, does not panic, and does not fear, then that Bodhisattva Mahasattva is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom." Up to here, it is to distinguish the occasion for explaining in detail below the meaning that all dharmas are not perceived in the three times. Therefore, the words spoken above by Subhuti, such as the Bodhisattva is not perceived in the three times, etc., were repeated by Shariputra, who asked, "Subhuti, why do you say that?" After saying this, the venerable Subhuti said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra, "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, because there are no sentient beings, the Bodhisattva is not perceived at the prior limit." And so on, this is Subhuti explaining in detail the meaning that the Bodhisattva is not perceived in the three times. Because there are no sentient beings, the Bodhisattva is not perceived at the prior limit, this is because the self, sentient beings, etc., conceived by non-Buddhists are not truly existent, because these are past and future.

Nga. Just as there is no object of focus in all three times, in the same way, Bodhisattvas are also truly without focus in the three times, which is what is being shown. The reason for saying that sentient beings are empty, sentient beings are solitary, and sentient beings are without inherent nature is to show the various names of the self that is not truly existent, as speculated by non-Buddhists. For what reason, son of Sharadvati, endowed with life? "There are no sentient beings," and so forth, indicates that sentient beings, Bodhisattvas, and all three times are of one taste in emptiness, and because they are not different, they are non-dual, which demonstrates the reason for being non-dualizable. Thus, it is through explaining the selflessness of the individual that it is shown that Bodhisattvas are without focus in the three times. Son of Sharadvati, endowed with life, "Because there is no form, the past limit of a Bodhisattva is not focused upon," and so forth, indicates that it is through explaining the selflessness of phenomena that it is shown that Bodhisattvas are without focus in the three times. The explanation of the meaning of the words is the same as above. Just as with form, so too with feeling and so forth, worldly phenomena, and the six perfections and so forth, up to all-knowingness, all transmundane phenomena are explained as being without focus in the three times, thereby showing that Bodhisattvas are without focus in the three times. Son of Sharadvati, endowed with life, if someone were to say, "For what reason? Because form is all-pervasive, therefore one should know that a Bodhisattva is all-pervasive," and so forth, Shariputra asked Subhuti above, "Why do you say that because form is all-pervasive, therefore one should know that a Bodhisattva is all-pervasive?" Subhuti repeated the question and explained in detail the meaning of all-pervasiveness by using the example of space for all phenomena, mundane and transmundane, from form up to the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha. Just as space is not a real entity and is empty by nature, so it has no past limit, future limit, or middle, and is all-pervasive, in the same way, the five aggregates and so forth, worldly phenomena, and the perfections
