The explanation combined with the eighteen dharmas is the seventeenth. The explanation combined with the lineage ground, the eighth ground, the seeing ground, the thinned ground, the ground free from desire, and the ground of realization is the eighteenth. The explanation combined with the four fruits such as the stream-enterer fruit is the nineteenth. The explanation combined with the Pratyekabuddha and the perfectly enlightened Buddha is the twentieth. The explanation combined with the three vehicles and the all-knowingness is the twenty-first. The explanation showing the metaphor of the realm of Nirvana is the twenty-second. Thus, all those dharmas are not established as truly existing entities in the ultimate sense. Because there is no object of focus, they are like the sky. Because it opens a great opportunity for immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable sentient beings, it is called the Great Vehicle. Thus it is taught. Subhuti, whatever you say, "There is no coming or going in this Great Vehicle, nor is there abiding," Subhuti, it is so, it is so. And so on, why? Subhuti, because that Great Vehicle has no coming or going, it is called the Great Vehicle. Thus, the Blessed One briefly stated its meaning and praised it, saying: "It is true." The meaning that the Great Vehicle has no coming, no going, and no abiding is explained in detail. Why is that? Subhuti, all dharmas are immovable. From where do they come? They do not go anywhere, nor do they abide anywhere. Thus, the reason why the Great Vehicle has no coming or going is shown. In the ultimate sense, because all dharmas have no entity, there is no movement in the nature of suchness, and because it does not change, there is no coming, going, or abiding. Thus it is taught. Why is that? Subhuti, for example, this form, from where does it come? It does not go anywhere, nor does it abide anywhere. Thus, and so on, as mentioned above, all dharmas are immovable, and the absence of coming and going is the teaching of the nature of all dharmas, which is shown by name. Why is that? Subhuti, the form of...

The nature of is not coming from anywhere, and so on. In the ultimate sense, the emptiness of the nature of form without substance does not come from anywhere, does not go anywhere, and will not remain anywhere. This is what is to be shown. The nature of form, suchness, essence, and characteristics are merely different names for emptiness. Just as it is with form, so too should it be applied to feelings and other worldly phenomena, as well as to the six perfections and other unconditioned phenomena, up to and including the transcendental phenomena. Subhuti, you say that for that vehicle, neither the prior limit is observed, nor the later limit is observed, nor the middle is observed, and so on. This is because Subhuti previously said that the vehicle transcends the three times, therefore it is called the Great Vehicle. The Blessed One briefly stated this meaning, praised it as being true, and then explained in detail that the vehicle transcends the three times and the meaning of the equality of the three times. Why is that? Subhuti, it is because, for example, the past time is also empty of the past time, and so on. This is to show the reason why the equality of the three times is unobtainable. In the ultimate sense, the past, future, and present are empty of their own nature, and the equality of the three times is merely a nominal designation. In the ultimate sense, there is no nature of equality, and the Great Vehicle and the Bodhisattvas who abide in the Great Vehicle are also without substance in the ultimate sense. Therefore, the three times cannot be counted as one or two, and there is no difference. This is what is to be shown. Therefore, this is the vehicle of equality for the Bodhisattvas, the great beings. For it, neither equality nor inequality is observed. This is to say that not distinguishing between equality and inequality is the vehicle of equality. For it, neither desire nor freedom from desire is observed. From here until neither samsara nor nirvana is observed, this is to mention the names of phenomena such as desire, and the two extremes of their existence and non-existence.
