Because a Bodhisattva who abides in that state abides in the absence of characteristics, if the perception of characteristics arises, it will become the affliction of the Bodhisattva. The term "viewing as a cause" means that it is also free from the characteristic of viewing the arising of the result from the cause. One should not be attached to name, form, aggregates, elements, sense bases, and the three realms, because in reality, they are not established as truly existent. Attachment, clinging, reliance, and abiding in the three realms are merely different names for attachment. The term "attachment to the view of relying on the Buddha" means relying on the physical body of the Buddha, viewing the marks and signs as real. Thus, one will not see the Buddha, because the Buddha should be seen as the nature of reality. Therefore, one should not be attached to the view of relying on the Buddha. One should not be attached to the view of relying on the Dharma, because if one considers the scriptural Dharma, the twelve branches of scripture, and the Dharma to be attained, such as the ten powers and the absence of fear, as real, one will not see the Dharma's nature of reality. Therefore, one should not be attached to the view of relying on the Dharma. The term "attachment to the view of relying on the Sangha" means that if one clings to the noble Sangha and the ordinary Sangha as real, one will be attached to characteristics, and thus one will not see the Sangha as it truly is. One should view it as merely an illusion in the conventional sense, but in the ultimate sense, one should not cling to it as real or as a characteristic. This is what is being taught. The term "attachment to the view of relying on ethics" means that if one considers the vows of Bodhisattvas and the vows of Hearers as real and clings to characteristics, the ethics will not be completely pure. One should view it as merely an illusion in the conventional sense, but in the ultimate sense, one should not view it as real or cling to characteristics, and then the ethics will become completely pure. Therefore, one should not be attached to the view of relying on ethics. The term "becoming discouraged because all phenomena are empty" means that although in reality all phenomena are without substance and are empty, one should not be afraid and discouraged by emptiness, thinking that there are no results of good and bad actions, or happiness and suffering. One should view it as merely an illusion in the conventional sense.
