The term "completely pure" means that when generating the roots of virtue that make the Buddha-field completely pure, one fully dedicates them, saying, "By this root of virtue, when I become a Buddha, may my Buddha-field become completely pure," and one does not become arrogant because of this, nor does one grasp at signs. The term "not being wearied by immeasurable samsara, nor becoming arrogant because of this" means that in order to generate the roots of virtue that cause sentient beings to fully ripen and that make the Buddha-field completely pure, one abides in samsara until the all-knowingness is fully perfected, and one does not become weary of long samsara, and even if one generates roots of virtue, one does not become arrogant because of this. The term "abiding in knowing shame and being conscientious, and not becoming arrogant because of this" means that if a Bodhisattva does things that are not appropriate, they will feel ashamed and fear being blamed, because the Bodhisattva has generated the unsurpassed Bodhicitta, and if they then generate the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Buddha, the Bodhisattva will feel ashamed and fear being blamed, therefore not generating the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Buddha is the Bodhisattva abiding in knowing shame and being conscientious. Subhuti, these five dharmas are what a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should abide in on the third ground. The term "Subhuti, furthermore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding on the fourth ground should take up and abide in these ten dharmas, and should not abandon them" etc., refers to the practices that a Bodhisattva abiding on the fourth ground should cultivate. The term "abiding in solitary places" means that it is not just abiding in solitary places such as forests, but rather not mixing with the inferior intentions of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, realizing the selflessness of both persons and phenomena, and not grasping at any phenomenon as being real, this is abiding in mental isolation, this is abiding in solitary places. The term "having few desires" means that the Bodhisattva, for the sake of unsurpassed perfect

If one is attached to and desires even perfect enlightenment, then what need is there to mention worldly bodies and enjoyments? Thus, not being attached to and not desiring worldly and transcendental bodies and enjoyments is having few desires. 'Being content' means that even if a Bodhisattva is disparaged as being all-knowing, they do not cling to it as a real thing, nor do they become arrogant because of it. What need is there to mention being attached to worldly bodies and enjoyments and seeking something better than that? Thus, being content with just what one has obtained before and not seeking anything more is called being content. 'Not abandoning the vows of the qualities of cultivation' means that after realizing the profound Dharma, one does not cling to the characteristics of all Dharmas and does not abandon the vows so that no discriminations arise. Thus, one who possesses the qualities of cultivating discriminations is called 'not abandoning the vows of the qualities of cultivation,' and it should not be applied only to things like hand towels and brooms. 'Not abandoning the training' means that a Bodhisattva's practice of training is to train without discrimination, and not to keep in mind the trainings of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, etc., which involve discrimination. 'Disparaging the qualities of desire' means seeing faults in the five qualities of desire and not generating a mind of attachment. 'Generating a mind endowed with Nirvana' means not particularly clinging to the Dharmas that become the cause of Samsara and not discriminating. 'Completely abandoning all things' means not clinging to the characteristics of all inner and outer things and not regarding them as real, but completely abandoning them. 'Having no timid mind' means that the mind does not follow the objects of all consciousnesses and is not attached, which is called having no timid mind. 'Not depending on all things' means not regarding all inner and outer things as real and not keeping them in mind. Subhuti, these ten Dharmas are not to be abandoned by a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who abides on the fourth ground, but should be properly taken up and abided in. That is to say, a Bodhisattva who abides on the fourth ground should uphold these ten Dharmas.
