The 'ba' is as previously stated. The so-called 'recollection of weariness' is to not be attached to samsara, to regard what should be wearied of as virtuous, and to recollect it. The so-called 'recollection of death' is to think of the body as impermanent and to recollect not being attached to the body and possessions. The so-called 'recollection of the form of the body' is to think of the body as being filled with various impurities from head to heel, but to recollect not being attached to the body. These recollections are also meditated upon by those of the Lesser Vehicle, but if a Bodhisattva does not focus on them in the ultimate sense, but understands them in the conventional sense, and meditates on them in order to fully ripen sentient beings and to gain control over the mind, it is called the Great Vehicle. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is as follows: the four dhyanas, etc., that is, the four dhyanas, and the four formless absorptions, and the eight liberations, and the nine successive abiding absorptions are all shown to be the Great Vehicle. The characteristics and qualities of the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, the four immeasurables, and the four absorptions have already been explained earlier in the section on donning great armor. What are the eight liberations? 'One who has form sees forms, this is the first liberation,' which means that a meditator, as an antidote to abandoning attachment to the color, etc., of his own body, contemplates his own body as a form filled with various impurities from the brain to the heel and meditates, which is called 'having form.' 'Sees forms' means that after the samadhi of contemplating impurity in the inner form is accomplished, one contemplates the forms of external objects as being livid and decaying, etc., and the samadhi of meditating on ugliness is accomplished, which is called 'seeing forms.' 'Without the perception of form internally, one sees forms externally, this is the second liberation,' which means that some meditators do not meditate on the samadhi of perceiving their own body as being filled with various impurities, but contemplate the forms of external objects as being excellent and

Generating perception towards repulsive objects and meditating on concentration. "Delighting in the Good" is the third liberation, which means that for a meditator, due to meditating on the impure aspects of both internal and external forms, the mind becomes fearful and depressed. In order to restore mental strength and praise the beautiful aspects, or to shift from meditating on the impure aspects to delighting in viewing the beautiful aspects, one observes whether this leads to attachment to colors and other things, and whether the mind changes. To be aware of whether this will happen, one views beautiful colors and other things and meditates on concentration. The four formless absorptions, such as the sphere of infinite space, are as previously described. "Cessation of perception and feeling" refers to the absorption of cessation. In order for noble Hearers, Non-returners, and Arhats to abide in the bliss of Nirvana with remainder, one prevents the arising of various conceptualizations such as thoughts and feelings, and places the body and mind in equanimity. Thus, if one cultivates these eight—the first three liberations, the four formless absorptions, and the absorption of cessation—one obtains the cause for attaining the nature of liberation, Nirvana, and therefore it is called liberation. When Hearers and Solitary Buddhas cultivate these eight liberations, they cultivate with an object of focus. When Bodhisattvas cultivate these, they cultivate in a way that is without an object of focus, and therefore it becomes the cause for attaining unsurpassed Bodhi, hence it is called the Great Vehicle. "Closely accomplishing and abiding" means perfecting and meditating. The section from "What are the nine successive abidings of absorption?" up to "These are the nine successive abidings of absorption" indicates that the nine successive abidings of absorption are the Great Vehicle. That is, in order to tame their minds, Bodhisattvas successively abide in and gradually cultivate these nine concentrations: the four concentrations, the four formless absorptions, and the absorption of cessation. These are called the nine successive abidings of absorption, and their characteristics and the meaning of the Great Vehicle are as previously described. Subhuti, furthermore, the Bodhi-
