In order to hear these virtues, one must remember and familiarize oneself with their meaning and virtues. Remembering the Sangha means that there are three types of Sangha: the Bodhisattva Sangha, the noble Shravaka Sangha such as those who have entered the stream, and the ordinary Sangha. Remembering that these Sanghas are fields of merit, places of offering, those who have well entered the Sugata's teachings, and are supreme in gatherings and assemblies, and viewing them as virtues. Remembering discipline means that there are three types of discipline: the discipline of vows, the discipline of virtuous dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. Among them, the discipline of vows is to refrain from practicing non-virtuous dharmas such as killing. The discipline of virtuous dharmas is to engage in listening to the sacred Dharma, contemplation, and meditation, etc. The discipline of benefiting sentient beings is to ripen those sentient beings who are not yet ripe, and to liberate those who are not yet liberated. Such discipline is viewed as the cause of attaining the heavens and Nirvana, and is remembered. Remembering generosity means that there are three types of generosity: material generosity, fearlessness generosity, and Dharma generosity. If one practices such generosity, viewing it as the cause of obtaining perfect worldly and transcendental enjoyment, and remembering it, this is called remembering generosity. Remembering the deities means that the worldly and transcendental deities are the result of past good deeds, and if one practices in accordance with these deities and pleases them, it is viewed as the cause of obtaining worldly and transcendental accomplishments, and is remembered. Remembering the in-and-out breath means that in order to prevent the mind from being distracted and to make it workable when practicing meditation and samadhi, one must remember the in-and-out breath, viewing it as a virtue.
