It is called knowledge. What is familiarity knowledge? Knowing the path and knowing complete purification, that is, when Bodhisattvas cultivate the noble path, and cultivate meditation and samadhi, etc., they do not cultivate for the sake of manifesting Nirvana like Sravakas, but for the benefit of sentient beings, and cultivate and practice for the sake of familiarizing and completely purifying all dharmas, which is called familiarity knowledge. What is knowing sounds as they are? The wisdom of the Tathagata's all-knowing aspect, that is, with the wisdom of all-knowing aspects, knowing all sentient beings' various languages as they are, is called knowing sounds as they are. Subhuti, furthermore, the Mahayana of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas is these three faculties, etc., this is explaining that the three faculties are Mahayana. Among them, what is the faculty of "not fully knowing and causing to fully know"? The faith faculty of those Sravaka individuals who have not yet realized, etc., that is, for those Sravakas who have entered the stream, and those who dwell on the Bodhisattva's stage of aspiration, are called Sravaka individuals. In order to enable those individuals to obtain the fruit of entering the stream, and those who have not obtained the first ground to obtain the first ground, they cultivate, and in order to manifest the fruit of entering the stream, and the Dharma nature and merits of the first ground, from previously not knowing to knowing, when they cultivate and practice, for the five faculties such as faith, it is called the faculty of "not fully knowing and causing to fully know." "Not fully appearing" refers to when entering the first ground from the stage of aspiration, the conceptual dharmas such as the grasped and the grasper do not become objects and do not appear. Among them, what is the faculty of fully knowing? Those who are students of the path who fully know, etc., that is, for Sravakas and before obtaining the fruit of entering the stream, and before Bodhisattvas obtain the first ground, they cultivate and practice in order to obtain the Arhat fruit and the Buddha fruit, therefore those individuals are also called students of the path.

The so-called "knowing" refers to attaining the noble state and realizing the initial state by knowing the realm of Dharma. For those who have attained these states, their five faculties, such as the ground, are called the "faculty of knowing." Then, what is the faculty of realization through knowing? It refers to those who are beyond learning, such as Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas. These noble ones, such as Sravaka Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, tenth-level Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas, have fully realized and perfected all the Dharmas and merits that should be known and attained. Therefore, they do not need to learn further, and are called "non-learners." Their five faculties, such as faith, are called the "faculty of knowing what has been realized." The so-called learners and non-learners among the noble ones refer to those who, through accumulations of merit and wisdom, and other virtuous Dharmas, gradually diminish and purify afflictions such as desire, and non-virtuous Dharmas, until they disappear completely. Therefore, they are called "persons." Subhuti, furthermore, the Mahayana of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas refers to three samadhis, namely the four dhyanas, the four formless absorptions, and the cessation absorption. These are established as three samadhis based on the differences in the coarse, medium, and subtle flows of the mind. Then, what is the samadhi with investigation and analysis? Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having abandoned desire, having abandoned sinful and unwholesome Dharmas, possessing investigation and analysis, dwells in the first dhyana with joy and bliss born of abandonment. This is the samadhi with investigation and analysis. This is because when entering the first dhyana, the mind's investigation and coarse flow arise, so it is called having investigation and analysis. Abandoning desire and sinful unwholesome Dharmas, and the joy and bliss born of abandonment, etc.

It is as previously stated. So, what is the Samadhi of No Coarse Thought, Only Subtle Discernment? It is between the first Dhyana and the second Dhyana, that is, the state between surpassing the first Dhyana and entering the second Dhyana. When abiding in that Dhyana, the coarse mental thought is abandoned, and there is only subtle discernment. This is called the Samadhi of No Coarse Thought, Only Subtle Discernment. So, what is the Samadhi of No Coarse Thought and No Subtle Discernment? The second Dhyana and above, up to the cessation of feeling and perception, because there is no coarse thought and no subtle discernment, and the movement of the mind is similarly subtle, the Samadhi of No Coarse Thought and No Subtle Discernment is classified as one. The Dhyanas and Samadhis of the Form Realm and the Formless Realm, even if they are mundane, Bodhisattvas can cultivate them in a non-attached manner by realizing the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena, thus becoming Mahayana. Therefore, these three Samadhis are called Mahayana. Subhuti, furthermore, the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is like this, that is, the ten recollections, etc., which is explaining that the ten recollections are Mahayana. Among them, the recollection of the Buddha is in two ways, conventional and ultimate. Recollecting in the conventional sense is to recollect the complete enjoyment body and the emanation body, which are adorned with marks and signs, possess knowledge and conduct, are able to tame beings, and are skilled in guiding. By recollecting these qualities, one generates faith and reverence.
