For example, when a potter spins a potter's wheel, the duration of the wheel's rotation varies depending on the size of the pottery, and the potter knows this instinctively. Similarly, when a meditator trains the mind, they should be aware of the length of their breath as it goes in and out. The analogy of the potter and the clay is used to illustrate the difference between a meditation master and a student, as well as the difference between being skilled or unskilled in meditation. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, they recognize that in this body, there is the earth element. And so on, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, whether walking or standing, they observe their body in a non-attached way, with diligence, mindfulness, and awareness, contemplating and acting appropriately, free from worldly desires and sorrows. This passage teaches the establishment of mindfulness of the inner body by contemplating the four elements, such as the earth element. This body is of the nature of the four great elements, and the four great elements are also of the nature of impermanence. Therefore, in ultimate reality, it is not a real thing. If one understands this, one will not become attached to it. Therefore, contemplation through the elements is taught. The example of a butcher slaughtering a cow is used to illustrate that just as a butcher sees the slaughtered cow and distinguishes its various parts, so too should a meditator realize that their own body is of the nature of the four great elements. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, they recognize that in this body, from the soles of the feet upwards. And so on, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, they observe their inner body in a non-attached way, with diligence, mindfulness, and awareness, eliminating worldly desires and sorrows, and acting appropriately. This passage teaches the establishment of mindfulness of the body by contemplating the various impurities of the inner body.

That is, the mat. Thus, if one examines the body as being filled with various impurities, it shows that one will not be attached to the body. The example of a container filled with various grains shows that, like a farmer who is skilled in the types of grains, visibly observing various grains, and distinguishing the differences between grains, similarly, a meditator who meditates on the impurity of the body also shows that the body is made to appear manifestly filled with various impurities. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, sometimes in a charnel ground, various corpses are abandoned in the charnel ground, placed in a place for corpses, and so forth, this is to show the practice of mindfulness of the body by means of focusing on the external body. Seeing the external body in the charnel ground, new and old, unpleasant, possessing various new and old states, thereby examining that one's own body also possesses such a nature, thereby showing that one should not be attached to the body. Subhuti, thus, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, by not focusing on the internal body, observing the body, and so forth, this is to conclude and show the practice of mindfulness of the body in the manner that it appears in the Sutras of the Lesser Vehicle. The internal, external, and internal-external bodies are as previously explained. By not focusing on internal feelings, observing feelings, and so forth, this is to show the practice of the four mindfulnesses of feelings, mind, and dharmas in the manner that they appear in the Sutras of the Lesser Vehicle. The meaning of these is also as before. Subhuti, this is also the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing the four mindfulnesses in the manner that they appear in the Sutras of the Lesser Vehicle, this is also because when a Bodhisattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, after realizing the absence of self in both persons and dharmas, if one meditates in a non-focusing manner, then it becomes the cause for obtaining the unsurpassed Bodhi Great Vehicle, therefore it is called the Great Vehicle, as it is shown. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is to diligently abandon in this way.
