This is an explanation of emptiness. Here, "all dharmas" refers to the five aggregates, twelve sources, eighteen elements, six contacts arising from combination, six feelings arising from the cause of combined contact, forms with form, forms without form, conditioned dharmas, and unconditioned dharmas. The nature of these dharmas is not truly existent, therefore it is called "all dharmas are emptiness." Next, "What is the emptiness of self-nature?" and so on, is an explanation of the emptiness of self-nature. Because conditioned and unconditioned dharmas do not exist in ultimate truth, they also do not possess self-nature, therefore it is called "emptiness of self-nature." Other characteristics are already included in the emptiness of self-nature, so there is no need to elaborate. However, for the sake of explanation, a brief explanation can still be given: "The element is the nature of affliction" refers to the fact that the eighteen elements are the cause of samsara. "The perfection of discipline is the nature of complete freedom from suffering" refers to the fact that those who possess discipline do not make mistakes, so they do not regret it later, and there is no suffering in their hearts. "The perfection of diligence is the nature of invincibility" refers to the fact that those who possess diligence are not defeated by obstacles such as demons, and are invincible. "The perfection of meditation is the nature of complete concentration" refers to the fact that those who possess meditation can concentrate their minds on one point, and through the fruits of meditation—such as miraculous powers—they can ripen sentient beings and gather roots of virtue. "The perfection of wisdom is the nature of non-attachment" refers to the fact that wisdom can realize that all dharmas are without self-nature, so one will not be attached to anything. Meditation, the four immeasurables, and the form realm attainments are all natures of non-distraction. This is because these dharmas such as meditation can make the mind free from distraction. The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are the nature of liberation. This is because the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, such as the four mindfulnesses, are the cause of liberation from samsara and attainment of nirvana.

Therefore. The door of liberation, emptiness, is called the characteristic of solitude, because it realizes that all dharmas are empty and is not mixed with any object. The door of liberation, signlessness, is called the characteristic of peace, because not grasping various signs is peace. The door of liberation, wishlessness, is called the characteristic of eliminating suffering, because it does not cling to or desire the happiness of the three realms, so there is no suffering to be obtained. Liberation is called the characteristic of liberation, because the eight liberations are called liberation, and they liberate from attachment to the body of the three realms, etc., and cause liberation. The powers are called the characteristic of complete realization, because the ten powers of the Tathagata, such as knowing what is and is not, are the nature of knowledge, so they are called the characteristic of complete realization. The fearlessnesses are called the characteristic of complete teaching, because if one possesses the four fearlessnesses, then the opposing forces of demons, etc., cannot be subdued or transformed. The individual correct knowledges are called the characteristic of non-interruption, because if one possesses the four individual correct knowledges, etc., then demons, etc., cannot create obstacles. Great joy is called the characteristic of great joy, because when sentient beings obtain the perfections of the world and beyond, bodhisattvas rejoice as if they themselves had obtained them, or when bodhisattvas obtain the first ground, they experience great joy when they realize the purity of the realm of dharma. Great equanimity is called the characteristic of non-contamination, because one's mind is equal without love or hatred for both enemies and friends, so it is equal to the minds of love and hatred, and is not mixed. The eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha are called the characteristic of non-seizure, because the Tathagata has no confusion, etc., and demons and heretics, etc., cannot cause them to decline or deteriorate. The wisdom of all-knowingness
