Having meditated, then meditate with great love on love that is less than that. Then meditate with moderate love on a little love. Then meditate with a little love on those who do not love at all. Likewise, for the people of a whole household, the people of one city, the people of one country, the people of one region, the people of one kingdom, the people of one continent, the four continents, and from the three thousand great thousand world realms to all sentient beings in the limitless and boundless realms of the ten directions, it is taught to cultivate and meditate on love, expanding it more and more. That which is called the great mind endowed with compassion, the extremely vast, and so forth, is the teaching of meditating on immeasurable compassion. Compassion also has three aspects: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on the Dharma, and having no focus. The three aspects are divided according to the stages of the ground, the qualities of being vast and extremely vast, and the expansion of the habit of focusing on sentient beings, becoming ever greater, is as before. That which is called the great mind endowed with joy, and so forth, is the teaching of meditating on immeasurable joy. Joy also has three aspects: joy focused on sentient beings who are happy and prosperous, joy from the complete perfection of one's own accumulation of merit and wisdom, and the joy of realizing the sacred Dharma and bringing it into practice. That which is called the great mind endowed with equanimity in a non-objective manner, and so forth, is the teaching of meditating on immeasurable equanimity. Equanimity also has three aspects: when working for the benefit of sentient beings, temporarily leaving aside those sentient beings who are not suitable; and equanimity that is not defiled by the eight worldly dharmas of gain and loss, praise and blame, fame and infamy, happiness and suffering; and non-discriminating equanimity. The qualities of being vast and so forth, and meditating on pervading all ten directions, both joy and equanimity are as explained above. That, having completely transcended the perception of form in all aspects, this Bodhisattva

Ah, in order to perfectly accomplish the perfection of generosity of the great Bodhisattva, here is taught the method of meditating on the four formless absorptions. The so-called "completely transcending all perceptions of form" refers to feeling weary of and unattached to the essence of form, such as color and shape, thereby generating an aspiration like that of space, which is to be free from the perception of form. The so-called "the perceptions of resistance all vanish" means that having become separated from the perception of form in this way and having become accustomed to meditation like that of space, obstacles and obscurations such as mountains and walls will disappear. The so-called "not thinking of various perceptions" means that having become separated from the perception of form in this way, thoughts of various things such as food, drink, youth, clothing, and ornaments will not arise. The so-called "space is infinite," that is, approaching and abiding in the sphere of infinite space. This means that having become separated from all perceptions of form in this way, one should become accustomed to aspiring to be like space, and abide in meditating on the thought that "space is also infinite." The so-called "completely transcending all the sphere of infinite space, abiding in consciousness is infinite," that is, approaching and abiding in the sphere of infinite consciousness. This refers to refuting that the thought of meditating on infinite space is also based on coarse objects, explaining that all of this is just consciousness, and abiding and meditating on the thought that "consciousness is also infinite." The so-called "completely transcending all the sphere of infinite consciousness, abiding in nothingness," that is, approaching and abiding in the sphere of nothingness. This means that having become accustomed to the sphere of infinite consciousness in this way, one realizes that there is nothing else, whether form or formless, other than consciousness, thereby abandoning the thought that "consciousness is also infinite," and merely abiding and meditating on the thought that "there is nothing at all."
