Therefore, praise and declare, "Being in a state of ease and equanimity." "Approaching and abiding in the third dhyana, which is without joy" means the characteristic of being separated from joy, as previously stated, is in accordance with this, and the dhyana is completely perfected and abides therein. "He has abandoned pleasure and also abandoned suffering, and because joy and displeasure have already vanished, he approaches and abides in the fourth dhyana, which is without pleasure or pain, equanimity, and mindfulness" refers to the nature of the fourth dhyana and the demonstration of its qualities. Among them, "He has abandoned pleasure" refers to being separated from the pleasure experienced by the body in the third dhyana. "He has abandoned suffering" refers to the fact that in the second dhyana, the inner being is completely pacified, the mind-stream has become one, and suffering has already been abandoned, so there is no suffering in this fourth dhyana. "Joy and displeasure have already vanished" is because it is said in the third dhyana, "separated from joy," so joy refers to pleasure, and because joy has already been abandoned in the third dhyana, there is no joy in this fourth dhyana, and in the second dhyana, the inner being is completely pacified, and the mind-stream has become one, and displeasure has vanished, so there is no need to abandon displeasure in this fourth dhyana, therefore it is said, "Joy and displeasure have already vanished." "Without pleasure or pain, equanimity and mindfulness are completely pure" means that in this way, having previously abandoned pleasure and pain, there is no fear of being tainted by the faults of dhyana, and there is no apprehension, because the mind is naturally accomplished, so it possesses completely pure equanimity and completely pure mindfulness. From "He, with a mind of loving-kindness, vast and exceedingly expansive" to "Filling and practicing with devotion, filling the ten directions that are replete with the realm of phenomena of the world, reaching the limit of space," is for the purpose of completely cultivating the four immeasurables, such as loving-kindness, while completely accomplishing the perfection of generosity.

This is an explanation of how to properly enter the Mahayana. Here, "immeasurable" refers to focusing on immeasurable sentient beings, being the cause of accumulating immeasurable merit and wisdom, and also being the cause of obtaining the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, and other immeasurable qualities of the Buddha, hence it is called "immeasurable." There are three types of loving-kindness: loving-kindness focused on sentient beings, loving-kindness focused on the Dharma, and loving-kindness without focus. Loving-kindness focused on sentient beings is: Bodhisattvas on the ground of faith and practice, focusing on sentient beings and cultivating loving-kindness. Loving-kindness focused on the Dharma is: from the first ground to the seventh ground, focusing on suchness, cultivating loving-kindness with the three circles completely purified. Loving-kindness without focus is: from the eighth ground onwards, without characteristics and without effort, due to the spontaneous accomplishment of non-discrimination, not even focusing on suchness, cultivating loving-kindness with the three circles completely purified. Among these, the qualities of loving-kindness are explained by phrases such as "the mind possessing loving-kindness is vast." Here, "vast" is because the samadhi is vast. "Extremely expansive" is because loving-kindness is increasingly expanded and increased towards all sentient beings in the ten directions of the world. "Non-dual" is because the nature of loving-kindness is non-discriminating, and its essence is one taste. "Immeasurable" is because it focuses on immeasurable sentient beings. "Unstained" is because there is no thought of harming from within the mind. "Without greed" is because there is no attachment to external wealth and so on, and there is no harm arising from greed. "Completely perfect, extremely cultivated" is because the practice of focusing on sentient beings and so on in the conventional truth, and the practice of completely purifying the three circles in the ultimate truth, has become熟练. "Pervading the realm of the world and Dharma, reaching the limits of space, filling and expanding the ten directions, believing and practicing" refers to when cultivating loving-kindness focused on sentient beings, at the beginning when the mind is not yet熟练, one cherishes the person one loves more than before.
