From the point where a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, abides in the Samadhi of Courageous Conduct, to the point where, like the sky, being unformed, he is liberated and abides in the Samadhi of Non-attachment, one should transform in a way that does not fixate on the great aggregate of sentient beings. This section demonstrates the practice of abiding in Samadhi. The characteristics of these Samadhis will be explained in detail later in the section on the Great Vehicle of Samadhi. Subhuti, dwelling in these dharmas, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, because he perfects the great aggregate of sentient beings, is therefore called a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. This is the Blessed One's concluding explanation of the meaning of the term Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Following this, in order to show the Venerable Shariputra's explanation of the meaning of the term Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, the Venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, for what reason is one called a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? I also feel inspired by this." Such words have been spoken. The meaning of the term Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, as explained by the Venerable Shariputra, is that having realized the great meaning of the selflessness of both person and phenomena, one abandons views of self, etc., and abandons views of the aggregates, etc., as phenomena. Therefore, because one teaches the great meaning of the selflessness of person and phenomena to many sentient beings, one is called a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. In this context, the Bodhisattva himself, having realized the selflessness of person, in order to cause sentient beings to abandon their attachment to a self of person, teaches the great meaning of the selflessness of person: "Blessed One, in order to completely abandon views of self, one teaches the Dharma to sentient beings," and so on, up to "completely abandoning views of non-existence." This is shown through the distinctions in the actions of body and mind, arising from the perverse views of the non-Buddhists, who regard the self, sentient beings, life, person, etc., as self.

Those who are examined in various ways are called clinging to the self of a person again. Bodhisattvas realize that there is no self of a person, and in order to teach sentient beings the great Dharma of no self of a person, they are called Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, which is connected with the following text. From "abandoning clinging to the aggregates, abandoning clinging to the realms" to "in order to abandon clinging to nirvana, they teach the Dharma to sentient beings, but do so in a non-clinging manner. For this reason, they are called Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas," is the explanation of the meaning of the words Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, because they teach the great Dharma of no self of Dharma. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the venerable son of Sharadvati: Venerable son of Sharadvati, why do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas cling to form, and even cling to nirvana, is to say that Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas teach the Dharma in order to make sentient beings abandon clinging, not to ordinary sentient beings, but to those who are determined to have a large group of sentient beings from the lineage ground to the non-returning ground, teach them the Dharma and become their leaders, so they are called Mahasattvas. If among these large groups of sentient beings, those in the lineage ground, etc., Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, because they have not realized the non-self of Dharma, it is possible for them to cling to the aggregates, etc., as Dharma, then, why do Bodhisattvas above the first ground, because they have realized the non-self of Dharma, still cling to the aggregates, etc., as Dharma? This is the question. The answer is: Venerable Subhuti, here, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practice the Prajnaparamita, and because they are not skilled in means, they cling to form and generate clinging in a clinging manner, and even cling to nirvana and generate clinging in a clinging manner, is Subhuti's answer to the question, those Bodhisattvas are not skilled in means.

This is to show that views arise from focusing on forms and other worldly and transworldly dharmas as real entities. The venerable Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will be seen as clinging to form, and even to being seen as completely liberated from suffering, because of unskilled means, views arise by clinging to forms and so on, therefore, one will be seen as clinging to forms and other worldly and transworldly dharmas as real entities. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices Prajnaparamita, in order to abandon those forms of views with skillful means, he teaches the Dharma in a non-clinging manner. This is to summarize and explain the meaning of the term Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, that is, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva understands the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of dharmas, and in order to abandon the views of clinging to persons and dharmas, he proclaims the great meaning of the selflessness of persons and dharmas, therefore he is called Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, for what reason is a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva called, I also have the courage to ask about this," etc., this is to explain the explanation of the term Bodhisattva-Mahasattva by the venerable Subhuti. Bhagavan, the mind of Bodhi is the unequal mind and the equal mind, it is not the mind shared by all beings such as Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and there is no attachment to such a mind, therefore it is called Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. This is to explain that there is no attachment even to the mind of Bodhi that realizes the purity of the Dharmadhatu of unsurpassed Bodhi, because such a mind without attachment is vast, therefore it is called a great mind. The so-called unequal mind and equal mind, unequal refers to unsurpassed Bodhi, because unsurpassed Bodhi is unequal and equal to what, therefore the mind of Bodhi is unequal and equal.
