Because of the combination of sounds, names have no meaning. For that very reason, that name is not manifestly established either. The name itself is not manifestly established. Therefore, the name of a Bodhisattva is not manifestly established, and the attainment of the name of the All-Knowingness itself is not manifestly established, which is called the fifth meaning. Thus, for the time being, these five words negate the attainment of a Bodhisattva who is designated by way of the selflessness of phenomena and by way of mere names. In order to negate that by way of the selflessness of persons, it is the sixth word, as the Bhagavan said, "I to myself," and the Bhagavan, "I am utterly not manifestly established," in which "utterly" is not manifestly established in words, because it is not truly existent, just as the characteristic that does not exist as it is, is understood by sound and occasion. Likewise, all phenomena and Bodhisattvas are also non-existent. Having made the absence of the nature of other-dependence the authority, the seventh word was spoken, such as, "Likewise, phenomena do not have intrinsic nature." From where is this known? Because the Bhagavan showed from the Great Mother Sutra with the twelve words of Subhuti. Therefore, for the attainment of the names and causes of these twelve, when Shariputra asked the question, the Venerable Subhuti explained in the order of reasoning, which is the seventh word. When asking for the reason why words do not have intrinsic nature, and subsequently asking by showing the reason with no intrinsic nature, Shariputra concluded by saying that all phenomena are without substance and without intrinsic nature in this way. Then, here also, what should be known is the question, the subsequent question, the statement of reason, and its conclusion. This is to be understood by meaning, and it is not specifically indicated. If it is specifically indicated, then most of the seventh word will be damaged, because the damage of the seventh word will become three ways: what arises from time will become the next word and one word, which is the first damage. The first division of meaning made in words is removed, and the sixth division is made, which is the second damage. Removing "the nature of no substance" and only saying nature

Being called "non-existent" is the third fault. The meaning is to be explained. The term "thus" refers to the nature of other-dependence. The nature of these being without entity is the very nature of non-entity, which is all phenomena. As it is said, the self-nature arising from aggregation is non-existent, because it is interdependent origination. The continuous abiding is aggregation. Whatever exists therein arises from aggregation. Whatever arises from aggregation has no self-nature, because if it is separated from the cause, it exists or does not exist. Furthermore, that which is interdependently originated is impermanent. From the outside, it is not reasonable for existing things not to come from the outside, because that is contradictory. Therefore, in the same instant, whatever entity exists has no self-nature apart from that instant. Therefore, the self-nature of those non-entities is such. Furthermore, whatever is impermanent is suffering, and suffering should be abandoned. Therefore, these are also the nature of non-entity. Therefore, by the power of others, with their own nature, Bodhisattvas will not attain omniscience. This is the seventh meaning. By investigating the self-nature of non-entity, can one not attain form and so on? Because phenomena such as potters making pots and weavers weaving cloth appear. Therefore, it is said, "What is that form?" and so on. What is it that appears as the investigated form and so on? It is nothing at all. All investigation is the meaning of "unconditioned dharma." Therefore, the subsequent indicative words are the reasoning spoken by Subhuti: all dharmas are unconditioned, because this is without fabrication. Potters and weavers and so on are also investigated, therefore they are non-existent in meaning. Therefore, the arising and ceasing and so on of investigation are prevented, which is the eighth meaning. Bhagavan, from this Mother, the grasping of investigation is also prevented, because that is what children grasp. After the eighth, the nature that is completely established by three words.
