All the activities of the body of the lands are the first. All the activities of speech are the second. Abiding equally by nature, and the attention that manifests samadhi, those two are the third. Looking at sentient beings with the Buddha's eye, and the attention that brings the gods near, those two are also the fourth. Where does he reside? It is said to be in Rājagṛha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar). Rājagṛha refers to the palace surrounded by many kings in the city of Magadha. Which direction is that? It is said to be on Vulture Peak (Gṛdhrakūṭa). Why is it shown in Rājagṛha? Because this sutra symbolizes the place of the great Dharma king. Why is Vulture Peak shown? It is to show that it is difficult for the listeners to understand these things. Together with the great community of monks, the "great" refers to the great number and great qualities. The Arhat monk who has abandoned defilements is not included here, because that would include the noble Ānanda. Therefore, the fully ordained monk is included here, and there are two types here: the request and the four karmas, and the fifth is "come" and "not come". "Come" refers to the Tathāgata saying to the monk, "Come, practice brahmacharya", and "not come" refers to the Tathāgata merely thinking, and the hair and beard naturally fall off, the body wears Dharma clothes, the senses are pacified, and one has dignified conduct. The Sangha of monks, Sangha is a gathering, so how is it a Sangha? Because it is indivisible, it is a Sangha. Any, Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, even hundreds of thousands of crores of demons, cannot be divided, therefore it is called Sangha. "Together" means together. The great number among them refers to the Sangha of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, thirteen hundred not half full. Here it says "all also" etc., the fifteen words spoken are to show great qualities, the Arhat himself is a defile

Because of possessing the ability to destroy all enemies, it is called Arhat. Or, because it does not arise and is no longer born, it is called Arhat. Or, because it offers excellent offerings to the Tathagata, it is worthy of offerings, therefore it is called Arhat. Or, because it is the object of offerings and donations from gods and humans, it is called Arhat. Therefore, the merit of being worthy of offerings and becoming an object of donation refers to the cessation of defilements, the root of birth, and the root of virtue of afflictions, which are defilements. These are the defilements of desire, the defilements of existence, the defilements of ignorance, and the defilements of views, which are of four types. They are, in order, the five of the desire realm, the three of the existence realm, the imputed and innate ignorance, and the sixty-two views. Because these defilements are all ceased, it is called the cessation of defilements. They are, in order, the two aggregates of discipline and concentration, the aggregate of liberation, the aggregate of liberation, the aggregate of the wisdom of liberation, and the aggregate of wisdom, which is the manifestation of the cessation of defilements. Also, correct concentration, and the wisdom that ceases and is no longer born, correct liberation, and correct view. Also, completely knowing the cause of desire, completely knowing the cause of aggregates, completely knowing the cause of actions (formations), and completely knowing the cause of afflictions. Also, abandoning the truth of the origin of suffering, realizing the truth of cessation, cultivating the truth of the path, and completely knowing the truth of suffering. Therefore, simply because of the cessation of defilements, it is said that the pure quality is without affliction, meaning completely without affliction. Completely without affliction is of four types: complete absence of affliction of karma, complete absence of affliction of maturation, complete absence of affliction of afflictions, and complete absence of affliction of birth. What causes complete affliction and suffering, what causes complete affliction, what causes complete affliction, and what is complete affliction. Therefore, the cessation of ignorance leads to the cessation of actions, which is the complete affliction of karma.
