It is called viewing external forms through image perception. Similarly, one should cultivate aversion in the mind by meditating on ugliness. Or, when desirable forms are regarded as impure, in order to awaken whether attachment to colors and so on will arise, by focusing on desirable forms, entering the fourth dhyana, it is said that fondness for impurity arises. These are the three liberations of form. There are five formless liberations, from the liberation of the sphere of infinite space to the liberation called the cessation of perception and feeling. Among them, the purity of the four formless realms, such as the sphere of infinite space, is liberation because it is the antidote to the obscuration of tasting its flavor, and it is also called quiescence. The cessation of perception and feeling also abides in accordance with liberation. Relying on the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, the mind and mental factors are ceased, and because its obscuration is eliminated, it is liberation, and it is also called quiescence. The nine successive abidings are the four dhyanas, the four formless absorptions, and the cessation of perception and feeling. The ten powers of the Tathagata are the power of knowing what is possible and impossible, the power of knowing the maturation of karma, the power of knowing various realms, the power of knowing various inclinations, the power of knowing the superiority or inferiority of faculties, the power of knowing the path that leads everywhere, the power of knowing the defilement, purification, and arising of dhyana, liberation, samadhi, and samapatti, the power of knowing the recollection of past lives, the power of knowing death and birth, and the power of knowing the exhaustion of defilements. The characteristics of these are as described in the order of the sutras. Knowing what is a place as a place, and also fully knowing what is not a place as not a place, refers to the undesirable results arising from misdeeds as places, and desirable results as non-places. Virtuous conduct

Among all [dharmas], desire is the place. Non-desire is not the place. Stinginess leading to poverty is the place. Great enjoyment is not the place. Giving rise to great enjoyment is the place. Becoming poor is not the place. Immoral discipline leading to birth in the lower realms is the place. The beginning of happiness is not the place. Discipline leading to birth in the good realms is the place. The lower realms are not the place. Thus, and so on, being skilled in knowing what is and is not the place, with pure, unattached, and unobstructed wisdom, knowing things as they truly are for that very reason is non-inverted. Therefore, it is called purity itself. Repeating "What and what is true" is to show non-attachment. In what way is it true? Because all ways are known, it shows unobstructedness. That wisdom itself is power, because it can never be defeated by others and can always overwhelm others. Among "past" etc., here "place and cause" means having place and cause. In which direction does that action take place, that is the place. Whose cause are the Hearers etc., that is that action, i.e., having continuity. Vipāka (fruition) refers to happiness and suffering etc. "Various realms" means teaching. "Multiple realms" means teaching accordingly. Realm is higher intention, i.e., generating merit and non-merit, and immovability etc. "Various inclinations" means that here desire is inclination. For example, abiding in attachment also inclines towards hatred, and abiding in hatred also inclines towards attachment, and so on. "The order of faculties" refers to the difference of faculties such as faith etc. This is one with dull faculties. This is one with middling faculties. This is one with sharp faculties. This is one without faculties, and so on. "Knowing the path that goes everywhere" means that here Bodhisattvas know whether the realms of beings are definite or indefinite, i.e., they know and show the path that is in accordance with them, and for those who are determined to be inverted, they abandon them in accordance with abandonment. This is the [method] that becomes the antidote to desire. This is the antidote to hatred.
