Because one does not attend to various perceptions, it is said that space is infinite. That is, one dwells having closely cultivated the sphere of infinite space. Among them, the perception of form is the perception of blue, yellow, and so on. Not being attached to those means completely transcending all of those, because there is no appearance due to meditating on the perception of all space. The perception of obstruction is the perception of obscuration such as walls and fences. Various perceptions are the perceptions of mansions and gardens, as well as mountains, rivers, the moon, and the sun. Infinite space means that one who has an object focused on the sphere of infinite space is called that. He completely transcends the sphere of infinite space in every way, and says that consciousness is infinite, meaning he dwells having closely cultivated the sphere of infinite consciousness. How does one completely transcend this? That is, whoever believes that space is infinite through consciousness, he is liberated from that infinity, because the perception of space is eliminated in every way. He completely transcends the sphere of infinite consciousness in every way, and says that he dwells having closely cultivated the sphere of nothingness. That is, one does not see even a little bit of an object that goes upward from the sphere of infinite consciousness, which means that one enters into samadhi by making nothingness itself the object. He completely transcends the sphere of nothingness in every way, and says that he dwells having closely cultivated the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. That is, one also becomes detached from attachment to the perception of nothingness, and also eliminates it from that, because the perception of nothingness is also eliminated from the beginning, so it is without perception. It is just entering into subtle perception, therefore it is neither non-perception. Whoever closely holds the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one says that to him. The bodhisattva enters into those eight dhyanas and formless absorptions every day, before and after that, it is because he attends to the shape, sign, and characteristics of space. Therefore, it is said that he is neither in accordance with all these dharmas nor not in accordance.

Space is the form of the sky, because it does not admit difference and non-difference. Being formless, invisible, and unobstructed are called the signs of space, because they are in accordance with it in dharma-nature. Being without characteristics and having a single characteristic is called the characteristic of space, because space appears as a characteristic of emptiness. If one practices the perfection of generosity, dedicating all roots of virtue to all sentient beings in common for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, then it becomes the perfection of generosity itself. If one practices the perfection of discipline, completely abandoning the attention of hearers and so forth is the perfection of discipline. Likewise, the remainder should be understood by following the six armors. Samadhi and the formless attainments are also like that. The practice of the six perfections, six each, is as it is in the sutra. Entering the path is also as it is in the sutra, and the various divisions of the path will also be explained in detail from the collection of paths. The limitless entrance will be explained, because it is limitless since it is focused on countless sentient beings. It is fourfold: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Among these, the thought of being truly endowed with happiness is loving-kindness. The thought of being free from suffering is compassion. The thought of not being separated from happiness is joy. The thought of not being associated with all afflictions is equanimity. Alas, may all sentient beings have happiness, may they be free from suffering, may they not be separated from happiness, and may they be liberated from afflictions. These four, on the ground of practice through aspiration, are focused on sentient beings. For the seven, such as great joy, it is focused on dharma. For those higher than these, there is no focus. By saying 'with a mind of loving-kindness,' this alone shows that it is endowed with qualities. The remainder shows the qualities. 'Vast' shows the great thought. 'Great' means increase. 'Limitless' means from the object.
