The sixteen moments are the characteristic of non-retrogression for those who abide in the path of seeing of Bodhisattvas. What are the sixteen aspects of the moments? The five verses in the middle state: 'The reversal of forms and other consciousnesses, the steadfastness of mind from inferior vehicles, the complete exhaustion of the limbs of meditation and so on, lightness of body and mind, skill in the practice of desire, constant pure conduct, purity of livelihood, obstacles such as aggregates, gatherings and powers, warfare, stinginess, etc., conjunction and subsequent conjunction, separately preventing dwelling, not perceiving even a speck of dust in the Dharma, certainty in one's own ground, dwelling in the three grounds, giving up life for the sake of the Dharma, such sixteen moments are the signs of non-retrogression for the wise who abide in the path of seeing.' Thus it is said. By the emptiness of one's own nature, even the subtle clinging to forms and so on as signs is reversed, by the blessing of the Buddhas and so on, the mind is steadfast in unsurpassed Bodhi, by practicing the special Dharma of the Great Vehicle, the mind is liberated from the inferior vehicles such as the Hearers, by the power of skillfully distinguishing the Dharma, the limbs of birth in meditation and the formless attainments and so on are completely exhausted, these four are the aspects of the truth of suffering. By being separated from non-virtue, the body and mind are light, by the skillful means of taming sentient beings, approaching desire without manifest attachment, seeing the faults of objects and constantly practicing pure conduct, by the Dharma nature of noble beings, not making predictions of inferior things and so on, the means of livelihood are pure, these four are the aspects of the truth of origin. Abiding in emptiness, separately preventing the dwelling of conjunction and subsequent conjunction with the aggregates, sense bases, and elements, by eliminating the dissimilar categories, separately preventing the conjunction and so on with the Dharma that obstructs realization as before, completely knowing the faults of conceptual thought.

And individually severing dwelling in the conduct of the Bodhi accumulation of generosity and so forth, and severing the grasped and the grasper, with the nature of what should be abandoned, individually severing dwelling in the root, the support, the object, and what is mine, these are called the four aspects of severance. By understanding the distinctions of generosity and so forth, severing dwelling in the conduct and subsequent conduct of miserliness and so forth, and because of understanding that all dharmas are the nature of the three doors of liberation, therefore even a mote of dharma is not found, and having obtained conviction, by determining to dwell in the three such as the unobstructed nature of the three knowledges, and by single-mindedly devoting oneself to giving up body and life for the sake of the Dharma of all-knowingness, these are called the four aspects of the path. Thus, by distinguishing the sixteen aspects of moments such as patience and wisdom, equanimity arises with pure results in accordance with one's own nature, and from turning away from the perception of worldly objects such as form, etc., having the aspect of non-attachment, whatever is encompassed by the subsequent mind, these are the signs of a Bodhisattva abiding on the path of seeing, not turning back. From obtaining non-retrogression on the path of seeing, non-retrogression on the path of meditation arises, wanting to explain its nature, because without grasping distinctions, the wisdom of having distinctions will not arise, so temporarily the distinctions of the path of meditation are proclaimed, the path of meditation is profound, profound is emptiness and so forth, profound is liberation from the extremes of superimposition and denigration. Because there is no form, etc., in emptiness, and there is no form, etc., other than emptiness, therefore, in order, liberation from the extremes of superimposition and denigration of emptiness and form, etc., whatever that is, is profound, that is emptiness, etc., therefore, because it has the nature of profoundness, the path of meditation is profound. After that, the basis of distinction, the actual path of meditation, is proclaimed, the decisive factor and the path of seeing, and on the nature of the path of meditation, repeatedly contemplating, and measuring and determining.

It is called "The Path of Meditation." Through the combination of Samadhi, and the wisdom arising from reality and its aftermath, the branches that distinguish definitively in order, and repeatedly contemplating the meaning of the Path of Seeing and the Path of Meditation themselves, measuring as it is, and correctly determining the realization, this is the continuous Path of Meditation. How many types are there? Regarding this, the classification is stated: "Because it is continuous, there are small, medium, and large. Also, with the distinctions of small of small, etc., it is considered to have nine types." What does this mean? Because the afflictions of Bodhisattvas are called discrimination, therefore, as the antidote to discrimination, the Path of Meditation is the characteristic of the ultimate truth of emptiness, and its nine classifications are continuous. For example, in the nine grounds of the desire realm, the four Dhyanas, and the four formless absorptions, in order, the large, medium, and small discriminations are each different, and they are different by the distinctions of large, medium, and small, making nine types. Therefore, their antidotes are like dispelling very great darkness with a small light, and the small is dispelled by the large. Each of the small, medium, and large are also different by the distinctions of small, medium, and large, making nine types. Therefore, it is considered that the classification of the Path of Meditation has nine types. If, for those who have emptiness as their object, how can there be distinctions such as merit? To dispel this doubt, it is stated in the scriptures: "The teachings of countless, etc., are not tolerable in the ultimate truth." What does this mean? In such and such Sutra-mother, each type of the Path of Meditation is explained, saying that countless merits, immeasurable merits, and limitless merits will arise. If the characteristic of the ultimate truth is without meaning, without letters, and without names, then how can it be tolerable to establish these? Regarding this, the scriptures answer: "In the conventional truth, the Sage considers it to be for the sake of teaching the similar cause of compassion." What does this mean? Indeed, as stated above, those are not in terms of the ultimate truth itself, but in the conventional truth without
